I couldn't help but wonder - is this all there is to modern feminism?

Great article.

JackBauer · 27/05/2010 16:30

I've never seen the programme or the films, bt I did enjoy that review. It basically just reinforces why I don't ever want to watch it!

No don't it was stupid, just came back. Am HUGE SATC fan, but this was just silly, Samantha slinging condoms around a UAE market yelling I have sex, just so typically Merican and Pushy eg: we are the best you are all doing it wrong.

Aiden and Carrie storyline huge anti-climax, Carrie moaning that her husband is tired and does not want to go to a movie premier and that their perfects apartment needed just one more bit of furniture to make it perfect; what a whinger.

The one best scene is when Charlotte locks herself in a cupboard to cry as her kids are driving her nuts. We've all been there I'm sure, but not because our child has put red handmarks on her vintage white skirt that she should not really have been wearing making cup cakes, but then as if by magic her full time nanny appears to take the kids away from her. One never appeared when I needed one.

Miranda was the only one who was still Miranda and not an idiot. Ladies, I am disappointed.

But some good bits, the gay wedding

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 07/06/2010 00:02

I actually loved the scene where Miranda and Charlotte were discussing motherhood over drinks. I actually at one point wondered if the script writers had been eavesdropping on a conversation between me and a friend (although neither of us have a nanny). Unless you have a place like mumsnet where you can rant facelessly about how your child is driving you crazy, you do tend to go around bleating about how great life is, when actually, you're knackered, sleep deprived, and, although you love your child wholley, you need a break to remember who you are

The scene where Charlotte locked herself in the cupboard also rang true with me, though like carocaro no nanny appeared when I was crying in DD's bedroom, just DD arriving to pat me on the head and tell me "it will be all okay mummy".

I do think the papers are bashing a bit too much on Miranda giving up work. She didn't give up work because she was missing her childs science fairs. She quit her job because she couldn't continue working for such an asshole and had the money to be able to be without work for a while. At the end of the film, she's working again for a different company. So I think its a bit unfair to suggest that because she gives up work for a bit, its a message that women should never work.

I think if you threw condoms around a market in Abu Dhabi you would get arrested. I spent some time there and, although some concessions are made for foreigners, you do have to be careful.

swanandduck · 08/06/2010 13:10

I thought the film was really disappointing. The whole point of the series was the New York background. Shifting it to Abu Dabai (cue scenes of the girls falling off camels and accidentally insulting the muslims) was a major mistake. Also, what exactly was the main storyline? Carrie being upset because her forty something husband doesn't want to go out on the town every night? Charlotte being unable to cope with two little girls, despite having a full time nanny and pots of money? Miranda having the luxury of being able to walk out of her job when her boss is being an ignorant pig? I wish I had their problems (well, not Sam's).
Also, what was with the outfits? They were absolutely and totally ridiculous.

MorrisZapp · 08/06/2010 13:20

Only saving grace of that appalling film has been the opportunity to slag it off at length - I've read countless sarcastic reviews of it and this is undoubtedly the best!

There's a backlash though. According to Bidisha in last weeks Guardian, SATC2 was indeed really bad, but if you slag it off too much it is because you is sexist.

So apparently we're supposed to accept this garbage and say 'it was bad, but so are lots of other films, and those films have men in them' instead of letting rip with our finest barbs.

The Carrie storyline was the most bewildering to me. Are there really, truly, people in the world who go out every single night of the week?

He should have told her to feck right off.

swanandduck · 08/06/2010 13:25

By the say, I went to see the film in my native Dublin and everytime the 'Irish' nanny opened her mouth the entire cinema burst out laughing.

Also, people in Ireland aren't called 'Erin'. People in America with Irish great grandmothers are called Erin.

MorrisZapp · 08/06/2010 13:30

It would have been great to see the Oirish nanny's tits really flying in a drunken, steerage class whirly folk dance wouldn't it. Wasted opportunity there
