although the alagation was not from inside the nursery

But still, parents must be frantic if their children were in her care.

It's horrific (speaking both as a mum and a nursery worker).

What are the checks on nursery workers MumInBeds? Is it all down to a clean CRB ? Or are nurseries under pressure to find staff and being less vigilant than they should?

BigFatSepticToe · 25/05/2010 12:10

I am sure no nursery would dare to skimp on their checks on staff, however, CRBs mean nothing - just they have not been CAUGHT, and the minute a CRB is printed off, it immediately is out of date (and i speak as someone who has 3 different CRBs for 3 different roles in the community!)

very sad, we work on trust when we leave our kids with anyone, and it goes against 99.9% of decent folk who cannot comprehend how someone trained and qualified to work with kids would do this

I think your op is a little inflammatory. "Yet another" implies that this is a regular occurrence and will probably upset posters with children in nursery care.

wannaBe · 25/05/2010 12:55

well she's not the first.

And while the alagations were not made at the nursery I'm sure the people whose children were in her care will be upset and terrified.

CRBs are an absolute essential but as BigFatSepticToe says, their value is very limited, it is simply a snapshop.

There is the new barring and vetting scheme on its way in which from the 1st Nov this year all new starters working with vulnerable people (which includes children) must register with the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA). Anyone registered with the ISA will be continually monitored for both convictions and reports of accusations.

Other than that, at my work place at least (a pre school), we try to work in a way so as to protect the children (and ourselves), on the occasions when intimate contact with a child is needed (nappy changing for example) it is done in an area only partially secluded from our main work area and any incidents that could cause concern (for example a child recently became injured in his groin area after being bounced too hard by another child on the see-saw) is carefully recorded and reported to the parent.

I'm not sure there is any system that will cover everything though.
