Sorry if I'm duplicating any threads here, but I've only just heard about this disgusting article.

OP posts:
UnquietDad · 18/05/2010 19:36

But it's so shoddily written and researched. People on here have already shot to pieces two of her major, vague claims - that it is somehow a "middle class" disease and that women in poor parts of Africa don't get it. And her anti-men ranting is just disgraceful.

scottishmummy · 18/05/2010 19:39

some perspective reqd.dm chuff not BMJ evidence based peer reviewed scholarly article

frankly read the dm expect well i never indignant rant

are you seriously suggesting people believe everything in dm/print media

it is a nasty snipy written for effect schlocky article.written for effect to elicit responses

do see my previous post for my opnion on depression

not condoning the content at all,but you know what there is a an element of being discerning and ,acknowledging this is an opinion peice not clinical fact.i appreciate it causes ire as it taps into the pull yourself together myth

its not observational good clinical article it is schlock written for effect.so it is depression today in dm.tomorrow it will be working mums cause attachment disorder and psychosis

some believe it yes.some believe elvis lives in bathgate

you give dm too much credence

SirBoobAlot · 18/05/2010 20:18

Unfortunately a lot of people do buy, read and believe the DM. It is written to shock and to sell, but a lot of the time the people who read it fully agree with what they are reading. Quite sad, really. Worse still, its generally intelligent people - like my father - who do.

moondog I know you relish the opportunity to dust off your views on depression, but you could shit with more eloquence than JSP can write. Don't lower yourself.

marcsalmond · 18/05/2010 20:20

she isn't saying it doesn't exsist though is she?

scottishmummy · 18/05/2010 20:23

dm linked daily on mn,does that mean mn folk read and believe too?

article is obviously trying to be contentious and badly written

yes some hold these views.and some dont.one can post comment and contend the content

yes and some like you dont beleive.liberal democracy press can print what they wish, and it doesnt necessarily shape attitudinal beliefs or determine behaviour

you know what - i use nursery for my children full-time baby room

mn and dm orthodoxy is that this is a dreadful thing, that they will be disturbed, get psychosis, plooks, attachment disorder etc.

do i care?

do i hell

because it isnt true

they can write it,people can read it
doesn't make it right

this is cyclical.and some wont believe it either. part of recovery from any mental illness is self efficacy, self belief and ability to tolerate some people arent supportive.to know were and how to seek support

and yes i acknowledge this causes pain, touches a nerve.however one needs some robustness

cant ban dm por stop it printing such stuff

as i said tomorrow it will vilify another group

Ivykaty44 · 18/05/2010 20:53

no scottish mumy - they just hate the smae people every day

forignee single mothers and mental illness

oh yes people that may be vulnerable so they couldn't possibly fight back and can be used as a scape goat

basicly though the daily mail prints what their readers want to read - so it isn't easy to decide who is worse the feeder or the fed

Whilst i dont think she has done any favours to those really suffering from depression , i have to admit to having a fair few amongst my own friends who claim to be depressed when actually what they really mean is life isnt a bed of roses at the moment and lets be honest theres a huge difference .

bumpsoon · 18/05/2010 22:02

I say this as someone who has looked after people with clinical depression and i can catergorically say it has no class boundaries , i nursed a bin man and someone distantly related to the queen .

CarrieDaBabi · 18/05/2010 22:10

what a horrid view from jsp.

i know someone close to me that spouts that sort of shit in front of people that have been depressed and it has always made me see red. glad others feel that way too.

Cartoose · 18/05/2010 22:28

"And her anti-men ranting is just disgraceful"

I know, it's just horrible. I ranted a bit on some of her crazy attitudes on gender earlier in this thread.

There are some who, I'm sure, will read and believe her tripe re depression but I'm heartened to see many of the comments below the article are against her strange ramblings.

ItsGraceAgain · 18/05/2010 22:39

Just caught up. Thank you, nighby

mathanxiety · 19/05/2010 06:10

Thing is, there are people whose families are less than supportive of their efforts to seek and benefit from mental health treatment, and an ignorant piece like this plays into the hands of curmudgeons who are possibly inclined to poke fun at someone in their own family who is struggling. It hits home, for some people, in the worst possible way.

Kathyjelly · 19/05/2010 08:12

Ah well, I never did like her anyway. Too loud mouthed and ignorant for my tastes.

Quite how she thinks being wide awake and exhausted at 3am, or being so scared of the phone ringing that it makes you cry can be trendy is beyond me.

BeenBeta · 19/05/2010 08:30

"Every day, loads of women get divorced, lose a loved one, give birth and find out they have a terminal disease. But, miraculously, 90 per cent of us, don't get depressed about it, don't take special medication and don't whinge about 'black holes'. That's life in the real world. "

Well yes.... but the other 10% do and usually for very good reason. My mother did have depression when I was a child and for many years. She is literally a totally different (much happier outgong person) now.

The fact that 90% don't get deperession does not prove the other 10% are whinging and making it up.
