So, the Met finally admit they killed Blair Peach - will it take 'em 30 years to admit to Tomlinson, too?

report here

Shocking that it has taken 30 years to release this report and that no officer has ever been held accountable. What's the chances they might be rather more honest over the death of poor Mr Tomlinson at the G20?

Other murderers are arrested, charged and tried for offences even if it takes decades. Smacks of one law for the police, one law for everyone else.

Skimmed it very briefly on the train - is he a professor of ethics or something equally bizarre?

I remember this very clearly, I was on the march (so showing my age). I remember the SPG being really feared. I grew up in London so don't know if they were operating anywhere else. They were well known as thugs and bullies. One member lived in my friends street. He was a total twunt and really abused his position, not only as a copper but SPG too.

Kreecher, Yasmin Alibai-Brown (sp?) did a column on this in the Times today - says she was there on the march too.

yes, what about this Officer E- I heard him on the radio, what's he a professor of? where?
Didn't they basically blame BP for having an abnormally thin skull or something at the time?

edam · 28/04/2010 23:03

Sheffield, I think, and something to do with corporate social responsibility, ironically enough...

As for the skull thing, how terribly irresponsible of the protesters to go around with ordinary skulls that weren't reinforced to withstand the impact of a lead cosh...

The Met can get away with executing Brazillians at point blank range. TBH they are untouchable.

Things not to have
thin skull
dark skin
job on the City streets

Bizarre, even sick, complaint, given that the law (criminal and civil) is that you cannot escape responsibility by claiming your victim had some unusual vulnerability or susceptibility. It's know as the thin skull rule... So yes, one law for cops and another for the rest of us.

edam · 30/04/2010 20:07

Eldritch - it's the eggshell skull principle (if my very dimly remembered first year of a law degree is correct). To do with negligence. But I don't think anyone has ever seriously suggested it has anything to do with this case. Skulls just ain't designed to withstand lead coshes.

I remembered it from my ancient tort case as the thin skull rule, but you may be right. I was responding to shallishanti on Officer E's apparent remarks. Agree that the principle had no genuine relevance to the case.
