Police officer who shot innocent man dead on holiday paid for by Met Police

BBC Online is saying the police officers who shot Jean Menendes, the innocent man killed in Stockwell, are on holiday at our expense.

"The officers have been moved to non-firearm duties for the duration of the IPCC probe, expected to take several months.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "An officer has had a break paid for by the Metropolitan Police, authorised by the commissioner, to allow him to take his wife and family away from the family home."

One of the other officers is already on a family holiday."

Wonder what everyone thinks? I can see why they are on leave - but not sure Met (we) should be paying for the holiday itself. Wonder if the Met, or the Home Office, will be contributing to the man's funeral expenses - it won't be cheap to repatriate his body to Brazil. Or his father's cancer treatment - apparently he was sending money home to help his family. If we are paying for the holiday, don't we equally have an obligation to pay funeral expenses?

Edam, I did say: "And of course emotion has to inform policy - we're not robots."

But it cannot be the only factor which decides what to do in any given situation. I am definitely not advocating an "I'm all right, Jack" approach, safe in the knowledge that me and mine are likely to be protected whilst others suffer.

I simply wanted to point out that difficult decisions have to be taken, and they are best taken by those who are not closely emotionally involved in the situation.

Of course, HM. But those taking them should be able to put themselves in the shoes of the people affected by their policy.

Yes, all of the people affected. And that means those who would possibly be affected if, for instance, the policy was to deal with hijackers - the likely outcome of that is more hijacked planes and more hostages.

Yes, of course. But until 9/11 the official policy for airline pilots was to co-operate with hijackers in order to save lives.

Not sure how hijacking relates to shoot-to-kill, though? Don't think anyone is saying we should give in to the suicide bombers - in fact it would be a lot more straightforward if they did make demands, at least we'd have a clue what the hell they want.

"I am very impressed that my post saying I didn't agree with shoot-to-kill wasn't shouted down. "

I knew YOU were safe when you said it - even I got away with saying it LOL

Yeah, funny that!
But I had to say it in response to being called on it, IYSWIM...
