Where on the Harrow Road? I work on the Harrow Road - not in today.

bluebear · 22/07/2005 15:59

The cctv pictures of all 4 suspects have been on News 24. Also confirmed that the Harrow rd (maida vale-ish I think) search (and 2 other searches that haven't been reported yet) are linked to the incidents yesterday.

TwinSetAndPearls · 22/07/2005 16:00

kensal green area I think

ScummyMummy · 22/07/2005 16:04

just logged on and trying to catch up with the events of today (i'm 6 hours behind you lot) wouuld it be poss for someone to give me a summary of whats happened? thanks

kid · 22/07/2005 16:35

a suspect was shot and killed at stockwell station (south london)
the police are searching 2 properties (I think) one in harrow road and one in kilburn.
Some stations have been shut but re-opened without incident.

dyzzidi · 22/07/2005 16:41

the suspect had been under surveillance but had refused to cooperate with police and ran from them he was apprhended and put on the ground where 5/6 shots were fired into his head. He apparently was the bomber from yesterday at the OVAL. Plain clothes offices (special branch?) carried out the shooting with a handgun in front of bystanders on a tube. Eyewitness reports differ some say he had a bomb belt on others say he did not have anything with him.

chicagomum · 22/07/2005 16:44

i don't know the facts, but are you saying they caught the guy and then just killed him on the floor infrontof everybody? omg it sounds a bit unecessary why didn't they just take him into custody rather than shoot him (5 times!!!!)

dyzzidi · 22/07/2005 16:48

It was believed he was carrying a bomb and apparently the advice when shooting suicide bombers is to shoot in the head as no explosives are concealed there. If they had shot anywhere else the man may have opportunity so detonate bomb or explosives could be shot so would detonate anyway.

This advise to police has been given in response to suicide bomb threats of late. They are now also ordered to shoot to kill in extreme circumstances to save lives.

I know it sounds extreme but was possibbly the safest way to protact innocent bystanders as well as police officers.

kid · 22/07/2005 16:50

they have been instructed to shoot to kill anyone suspicious. They had given him instructions which he apparently ignored. The police must have feared he had a bomb on him. They had followed him from a house under surveilance (sp?)

chicagomum · 22/07/2005 16:51

i guess you are right (or rather they are i mean) it is so sad that it has all come to this, i know there are always tragic and horrific events going on around us but it just seems the world is falling apart around our ears

edam · 22/07/2005 18:24

I'm with Chicagomum - it is horrifying that we have apparently armed police in London operating a shoot to kill policy. Since when did we bring the death penalty back? When did the police become judge and jury? Terrifying.

Nbg · 22/07/2005 18:28

Police have arrested 1 man

foxinsocks · 22/07/2005 18:56

kid, unless you are a police officer with SO19, I don't think you can say police officers have been told to shoot to kill 'anyone suspicious'.

It's unlikely this shooting was actually carried out by police (far more likely to be some sort of special forces) and there is no way 'normal' police would be given the powers to shoot to kill anyone.

kid · 22/07/2005 19:45

just what I read on the sky news website foxinsocks.

Nightynight · 22/07/2005 19:46

my experience of the police is that as soon as you are under suspicion they act as though you have been proved guilty. You never get any apology later either, when you are shown to be innocent.

Its pretty creepy extrapolating that to a situation where the police can kill someone they suspect of a crime. With results like todays shooting.

foxinsocks · 22/07/2005 20:00

wasn't having a go kid just that I do feel a bit sorry for the police in the current climate (I know they chose their job etc. but it can't be easy at the mo) - they are kind of damned if they do, damned if they don't

kid · 22/07/2005 20:02

thats ok foxinsocks, I did think you were having a go to be honest

foxinsocks · 22/07/2005 20:09

I know, I could tell but I wasn't, honest guv!

I used to work very near to where your hubbie's store is and my dh is going into central london every day so I know it's making us all v jittery!

kid · 22/07/2005 20:15

Was it that obvious?! I don't usually have arguments on MN, honest!

DH has gone back to work tonight as the alarms are going off. He thinks its the delivery guys that have set them off but he has to go in to check and reset them.

foxinsocks · 22/07/2005 20:18

Great - bet you're pleased! I hope you live close enough that the journey isn't a complete and utter pain

kid · 22/07/2005 20:27

He just phoned, there is a problem with the alarm system so he has to wait for an engineer. At least I get to watch BB in peace

I do want him to hurry up home though.
