Have commented and am waiting for it to be added.

I am sick of being termed a Bodenista - I only own one Boden skirt and that was in the sale.

mrsbaldwin · 16/03/2010 08:19

Much as I like to read Mary Riddell this bit of the article annoyed me a tad:

"The Bodenistas do not appear to do politics in the way that they, for example, do property ("OMG, I have expensive tastes!") or angst, or literature ("Am I unreasonable to hate the Rainbow Fairies?")."

It's just wrong this (Mary, are you reading?). There is a topic called In The News and a topic called Politics with people debating stuff in them and some of us even went to the Commons in person on Friday to take a stand with White Ribbon Allliance, Save The Children and others, on maternal mortality in the developing world! For myself I also have a view on property (expensive please!) and Rainbow Fairies (hate 'em!) - but that doesn't mean I don't also have a properly-considered view on the public spending deficit.

mrsbaldwin · 16/03/2010 08:20

Hey Scaryteacher! You are me are agreeing

Hassled · 16/03/2010 08:22

They're a bright bunch, the Telegraph commentators, I have to say.

"In my experience, woman have very little interest in politics, and there knowledge of the subject is shallow."
Betteroffout

"I fail to see what it is that women realy want (when they know themselves) has to do with politics and real life."

The assumption is always made that mumsnetters have babies, or at least young children, when in fact they are all ages. I have never worn Boden in my life and am not likely to either. I know what it is ,having seen a catalogue, but that is as far as it goes. They are much too generalistic.

It's so patronising, offensive and lazy. Sad I'm not shocked. Never worn Boden either, probably never shall!

animula · 16/03/2010 09:09

The punch is at the end, when she points out that real women are listening for the real budget. Which is true.

What isn't so great is the implied divide between mumsnet and real women.

If there is a divide, it's that politicians are still not getting it quite right when they try to engage with real women, through media such as mumsnet. They, still, try to do charm over substance.

That's where the divide is; not between real women and mumsnet.

But, tbh, it's hard to know what else the politicians were going to do, since both parties have, heretofore, been pulling punches about spending plans. Should be hotting up a little now, though.

Adair · 16/03/2010 09:15

Hassled, that actually made me laugh out loud - shocking and ridiculous!

Scaryteacher, I read your comment. It said perfectly what I wanted to say. 'Bodenistas' ffs. So irksome being referred to as if we are all the same with our one opinion between us?!!

ImSoNotTelling · 16/03/2010 09:24

How are we "self selected".

Less self selected than people who choose different sorts of newspapers I'd have thought.

Bonsoir · 16/03/2010 09:25

MNers are self-selecting because we all freely choose to be here and there are no admissions criteria.

OP posts:
animula · 16/03/2010 09:26

Self-selected possibly because we're not a properly representative and hand-picked focus group?

Self-selected because we have a certain autonomy in our own representation?

Self-selected because we have our own agenda?

Yup. self-selected is a wee bit empty.

ImSoNotTelling · 16/03/2010 09:31

self selected normally means people choosing people to be with who are the same as them

this is far less true of MN than loads of other things - newspaper readerships being a good example

yes there is an overall "flavour" to the site and people who don't like it won't stay - but it is a far wider group of people than I would ever meet in RL.

Bonsoir · 16/03/2010 09:33

We all have something in common - we are all members of MN and active participants on Talk.

TrillianAstra · 16/03/2010 09:35

Haha, love the comments, basically all saying 'this is the Torygraph you silly woman, we don't like Gordon Brown'.

ImSoNotTelling · 16/03/2010 10:03

We all have something in common, but we are by no means the same, I would say we are a pretty varied bunch really.

As for the boden thing - what about all teh goths on here I have noticed there seem to be quite a few! That;s about as far from boden as you can get I would imagine.

ImSoNotTelling · 16/03/2010 10:03

I mean we're not even all women for crying out loud mores the pity

JollyPirate · 16/03/2010 10:12

Good comment scaryteacher -

Kevlarhead · 16/03/2010 22:09

"I mean we're not even all women for crying out loud"

Hear, hear!

The Telegraph seems to be aiming for the 'angry-impotent-single/divorced-male demographic.

And is succeeding, in spades.

petisa · 17/03/2010 04:47

Oh my god, the commentators are sooo much worse even than in the DM! They're fecking scarily bigoted. I could feel my blood pressure rising as I read them. Why DOES she write for the Telegraph?!

scaryteacher · 17/03/2010 09:58

I don't know why she writes for the Telegraph - she makes my blood boil.

The commentators are good on economics and defence in the main, and education - but some are misogynist hen it comes to women and politics, and some are just posting tongue in cheek.

OrmRenewed · 17/03/2010 10:01

Ooooh who are those people in the photo?

Telegraph is good for cryptic crossword and football (according to DH). Nothing else.

OrmRenewed · 17/03/2010 10:08

Fuck me there are some freaks on that comment section

scaryteacher · 17/03/2010 10:11

Here's hoping you don't mean Riven and I!
