No way can 6 music go, I'm gutted, it is the only radio station I can bear to listen to (although I found George Lamb to say the least) I hear music I like and it makes me still feel vaguely young to hear new music- that makes it a valuable public service in my book!!

squeaver · 02/03/2010 13:47

smee - my point exactly, but much more succinctly put!

pippylongstockings · 02/03/2010 14:07

I a hopefully cynical (if that makes sense) I hope that the outcry and call to defend 6 music will work and it won't get axed, but cyncial that that's what they pretty much had as their idea.

The fact that the demographic of 6music is the type of people who will make their voices heard has to be a good thing.

George Lamb is fab he makes my weekends - love Lauren Laverne too. It's the only station I can hear such a wide range of music on it is wonderful.

smee · 02/03/2010 14:18

Poor John Peel'll be swivelling in his grave..

skidoodle · 02/03/2010 14:19

Agree with policywonk about most things and smee about Lonely Planet.

There is a need for a sharper strategic focus, particularly as "new media" becomes regular media.

What there was not a need for was a capitulation to people who want the BBC dismantled and are never going to be placated by self-immolation unless it involves a massive conflagration at White City and (even more of) the licence fee being pocketed by private companies.

clever1 · 02/03/2010 14:20

Such a sad state of affairs. Can't comment on Asian Network as I've never listened to it, but 6Music is one of the best things the BBC has ever done. Seems to me that the BBC are taking a big step backwards with this move. Surely with the UK moving away from analogue and into a digital era, you'd think that the BBC would want to protect its digital output and not lump it on the scrapheap to appease the anti-BBC / right wing brigade.

This would never have happened under Greg Dyke!

runningmonkey · 02/03/2010 14:26

I'm really sad about this. Have emailed and voiced my concerns.

I have a question - does anyone how are the listener figures calculated? Do they account for online listeners too? If not I suspect that the 600,000 listeners quoted in the the report might be a bit off!

policywonk · 02/03/2010 14:27

I like the conspiracy theory; I hope it's true. But the scrapping of 6Music isn't the only thing that's wrong with the strategic review, so I hope they don't just backtrack on that one and force the rest through.

You lot are all emailing the BBC Trust at [email protected], aren't you?

clever1 · 02/03/2010 14:37

Does anyone know whether the BBC Trust's report on this is available for the public to read? I fully intend to make my feelings known to them, but I would want to see first their reasoning behind scrapping certain services before doing my best to counter their arguments.

pippylongstockings · 02/03/2010 14:51

I have e.mailed BBC trust, and joined the group on facebook.

I feel very upset at this, it has really bought out my social campaigning side!

policywonk · 02/03/2010 14:58

Here you are, clever1

jooseyfruit · 02/03/2010 14:59

Nemone is giving this address out as the one to send your thoughts to- bbc.co.uk/trust/consultation or [email protected]

Heathcliffscathy · 02/03/2010 15:02

Losing 6music is a nightmare.

back of murdoch you force of evil!

clever1 · 02/03/2010 15:16

Thanks, policywonk!

said · 02/03/2010 15:17

This is awful. And did you see Michael Gove trying to threaten Kirsty Wark on Newsnight last night about the BBC - almost "Behave or we'll punish you (even more)" kind of thing. Twat.

notwavingjustironing · 02/03/2010 15:23

They could save some money by halving the coverage of Glastonbury. They simply don't need to send twenty different people covering twenty different aspects and, much as I LOVE live music it comes accross as a ligger's paradise.

I agree with others who have said that they have chosen something that will provoke the most outcry, but quietly behind the scenes are chopping swathes of other stuff.

Mark Thompson has done this sort of thing in previous roles.

DuelingFanjo · 02/03/2010 15:50

Strangely enough Glastonbury gets a special mention in the trust's report. Apparently it's something they will concentrate on in music online delivery, so maybe not so much on air?

OP posts:
notwavingjustironing · 02/03/2010 16:12

that's surely got to be a much more efficient way of doing things ? Accessing content on line, rather than watching "celebrities" wandering about in mud and wellies looking a bit vacant, whilst trying to provide a witty comentary does seem more attractive to me.

I don't need a camera on a great big swooping crane to tell me that a) the site is very big and b) there are lots of tents.

Don't get me wrong I love it, but like lots of big companies they waste so much money round the edges, whilst taking their eye off what is important.

ChutesTooNarrow · 02/03/2010 17:00

My world will fall apart if 6 Music goes. Well, maybe not, but I will be quite upset.

My understanding is these cuts are being made due to the prospect of a Tory Government. I guess the thinking is if the Tories are appeased by some cuts then they won't look too closely at other areas of the BBC.

Not my 6 Music though , I listen to nothing else, since I defected from XFM three years ago. Minority broadcasting is part of the reason the BBC exists, to give everyone a voice. I don't begrudge the BBC for the shitfest that is something like Snog, Marry, Avoid on BBC Three as I am sure it caters for some minority of viewers. I will begrudge it hugely though if that is the quality of output at the expense of 6 Music.

Agree about Glastonbury coverage, no need for every radio/ TV show to swan off there every year on a jolly (I might just be bitter that nothing like this existed in my Glastonbury going days.). Has to be other areas like this where cuts can be made.

zebedeee · 02/03/2010 17:25

I like your cynical idea/ conspiracy theory idea about 6music smee and hope you are right. The station has made me fall in love with music again - although I could cheerfully throw my digital radio away on Saturday mornings. George Lamb really is the fly in the ointment of musical salve. My conspiracy theory is that he is there to dumb down the station and reduce the listeners with his sheer lack of musical knowledge and inanity. The BBC could then say 6music is like radio 1 and therefore its existence is unjustified.

But Jarvis Cocker, Stephen Merchant, Guy Garvey, Adam and Joe, Jon Richardson all are/have been quality radio.

mollyroger · 02/03/2010 17:29

6music was the ONLY reason I bought a digital radio

The first time I turned it on, it played The Smiths, The Cure, Joy Division and the Fleet Foxes within the first 10 minutes and i felt like I had Come Home and was among friends.

bastards.

petunia · 02/03/2010 17:34

ChutesToo Narrow- there's also the rumour going round that The Sun switching its support from Labour to the Tories is also part of this. If the Tories get in, The Sun/Sky/RupertMurdoch will be 'rewarded' by the BBC's power/size being reduced. Just what Sky wants really.

My DH's a huge 6Music fan and is firing off e-mails in all directions about this! Fans of the station are not going to let this go without a fight!

CloudDragon · 02/03/2010 17:47

I love 6music

what a gap

get rid of BBC 3 (on the TV) that surely is a complete waste of space, the few good things it has produced could surely go on BBC2

ChutesTooNarrow · 02/03/2010 17:47

So far I have ranted at length to [email protected] and [email protected]. Also completed the consultation here BBC Strategy Review. I've also whinged a lot on Twitter.

I am willing to suffer the abomination that is George Lamb if it ensures the survival of 6
