don't move to utah? Seriously, it treats all women as potential criminals who may have to justify or explain why they miscarried in court.

Nancy66 · 28/02/2010 11:07

that's not actually what they're doing is it? They're criminalising abortion - which includes lifestyle behaviour that may lead to miscarriage.

Some poor woman who is pregnant with a wanted child and suffers a miscarriage isn't going to find herself behind bars - which is what your headline suggests.

It's a Mormon state - the overwhelming majority who live there are Mormon and would welcome this law.

Not saying it's right - but it's not a state that free thinking, liberal types would ever consider as their home.

oranges · 28/02/2010 11:12

but how do you define lifestyle behaviour that may lead to miscarriage? Having a glass of wine? A cup of tea? Going for a run? Walking home alone and getting attacked?

AvengingGerbil · 28/02/2010 11:14

Yep, so having a cup of coffee while pregnant may bring you to court.

And the poor woman with the involuntary miscarriage may well have to prove in court that her miscarriage was not induced by her behaviour. It shifts the burden of proof - instead of the prosecutor having to show that the woman induced the miscarriage, the woman will have to show she did not.

i agree to a point re who would live in utah, BUT not everyone who lives there is a mormon

i don't think that in this century, anywhere in teh world, a woman who smokes whilst pregnan or drinks should be criminalised if she loses her baby

it is so stupid !! approximately 25 % of pregnancies end in miscarraige, often v early on. i would have thought the vast, vast majority are due to chromosomal abnormalities and other issues, over which the woman has no control.. why not prosecute men who smoke/drink and get a woman pregnant.. his faulty , damaged sperm might be responsible for the miscarriage

it is a total utter outrage.

and misogynistic and reducing women to nothing more than vessels

i would like to see a lawyer PROVE beyond reasonable doubt that drinking a a small glass of wine caused a miscarriage, over something like chromosomal abnormlaity.

agedknees · 03/03/2010 17:06

I worked with a nurse who was kicked in the stomach by a patient when she was pregnant.

She suffered a miscarriage. Should she be taken to court for working in a dangerous job whilst pregnant?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 03/03/2010 17:11

The world has gone mad.

SolidGoldBrass · 04/03/2010 10:24

This is hideous. If any antichoicers on here are dumb enough to think, even for a minute, that it's a good idea and will teach those mythical selfish abortion-loving alcoholic bitches a lesson, just imagine it being you or your DD, already devastated by the loss of a wanted PG, being hauled up in court to be grilled on every movement, every thought, every bite of food and accused of killing your own child...

sfxmum · 04/03/2010 10:34

I presume they just assume the woman to be guilty until proven otherwise

because these devil filled twisted devious creatures are all about killing the babies at every opportunity

I expect this is just a fringe proposal and not an actual law

tummytime · 04/03/2010 10:44

SFX mum, it has been passed by the legislature so is imminently going to be law.

sfxmum · 04/03/2010 11:26

I guess the people voted them into office
