2shoes · 26/02/2010 22:29

hope so

SixtyFootDoll · 27/02/2010 08:42

I hope they do, waste of money IMO.
Just another headline grabbing non-initiative.
And while thy're at it bin the Welsh Assembly and Scottish PArliamnet

SuSylvester · 27/02/2010 11:18

and the direct gov ads with that cringey thing from her who failed at big breakfast on it

OP posts:
Rindercella · 27/02/2010 23:54

Should be scrapped imo - total waste of money, just like the 'health in pregnancy' grant.

ginghamgiraffe · 27/02/2010 23:55

who failed on BB? Kelly Brook?

Chil1234 · 28/02/2010 10:39

I should think all the universal benefits could disappear soon. Child benefit going to everyone regardless of income would be first for the chop. The Child Trust Fund is another one that better-off families will be expected to sort out for themselves and the ceiling for Tax Credits will doubtless be revised. All we'll have left is the state pension and, given that a lot of people now opt out and make their own arrangements, that'll get further eroded.

gherkinwithapurplemerkin · 28/02/2010 10:41

Thought meanstesting child benefit would cost too much? That's what they've always said.

Chil1234 · 28/02/2010 10:44

Child Benefit is higher if you're on income support so there is an element of means testing. However, reality is that it has been eroded for years. It will be allowed to dwindle to nothing, then quietly dispensed with..... and the Child Tax Credits (much more lucrative than CB) will continue to take its place.

venusonarockbun · 28/02/2010 10:52

Really - is Child Benefit higher if you claim Income upport? I thought Child Benefit was the same for all.

MrsPotiphar · 28/02/2010 10:54

i thought i read CTFis

anyway
i was surveyed
who will you vote for - no idea
who did you vote for - i cant remember
i can never remember
i just do it whim style

venusonarockbun · 28/02/2010 10:56

I certainly hope it is scrapped. It should never have been introduced in the first place. Complete waste of money. Will all 18 year olds spend it wisely?

MrsMorgan · 28/02/2010 11:02

Child benefit is not higher if you claim IS, it is exactly the same.

Chil1234 · 28/02/2010 11:11

My mistake. Used to be that the CB was higher if you were a single parent and on income support. Looks like they've dropped that

What is the child trust find for anyway?

venusonarockbun · 28/02/2010 13:16

Its booze money for the 18th birthday bash!

venusonarockbun · 28/02/2010 13:18

Chil - I think you were thinking about 'one-parent benefit' which was phased out years ago. It was paid in addition to child benefit.

I'm waiting for the policy where they try and claw out everything I've put into my sons trust fund under some 'donate money to the government pension' tax scheme.

GlastonburyGoddess · 28/02/2010 21:35

I agree it should be scrapped, total waste of money imo. ds1 has had his 6 yrs and it goes down in value every time we get a statement, after they take their annual fee, there'll be nothing left by the time hes 18-what a waste. Im certainly not contributing to it, Ill save for him in an account where they dont take an annual fee thankyou very much!

Also agree that the health in preg grant should be scrapped(although not until Ive claimed mine in 4 wks time lol) again another total waste of money, most of which people spend on baby bits/prams etc rather than healthy eating-also not means tested, whats the point

TurtleAnn · 28/02/2010 23:53

blimey, please don't waste any more of my tax on means testing pointless benefits
The government could link with large supermarkets and do a deal on frsh fruit and veg for pregnant women rather than providing a means tested grant. It would be cheaper.
