Guide dog being attacked by a staffie cross

I have just seen the ITV news where there was film of a guide dog being attacked by a staffie cross. The blind lady apparently had to move away as she couldnt bear to hear her dog screaming. The staffie owner was a 18 year old who tried to kick his dog to stop it attacking. Afterwards the owner just walked off. I cannot remember the sentence this yob got but he had refused to say what he has done with his dog. My blood just runs cold. My sister has a staffie and I have a rottie so I am not anti big dogs but in the wrong hands what terrible weapons they are.

Am I a wimp to feel like this. Really upsetting..

OMG did the dog die???

junglistwaspoorendof · 23/02/2010 20:10

Refused to say what he'd done with the dog?! WTF

I have a staffie cross and not anti dog at all but in the wrong hands any big strong dog is a potential weapon
Which is why it should be law to have to have a licence to own, breed and sell a dog/puppy.

This is why I think dog training should be comulsory.

Some twat with an ego who thinks he's hard with a dog he knows nothing about and has no idea of how to control.

I love my Staffy (well he is only 14 weeks ) but we will be doing training classes so hopefully he will listen to us when out and about.

Traing is definately a must but with an adpt trainer if possible.

I have seen some awful types of training that sadly some owners don't realise the negative effects it can have.

One trainer (ex police dog trainer) showed the owners how to dominate their puppies by using check chains and pushing them into submissive down positions with such force it was horrible to watch but not all owners know training doesn't have to be this way

I think it's irresponsible to have a dog that's stronger than you.

LynetteScavo · 23/02/2010 20:35

But lots of dogs are stronger than humans...even an untrained labrador can't be held back if it decides to go after a pheasant, for example.

paisleyleaf · 23/02/2010 20:37

Oh that poor lady. How frightening that must have been.

magnolia74 · 23/02/2010 21:21

sawney, if that were the case we would have to destroy most dogs bigger that a toy poodle

Its irresponsible for this country to allow anyone to breed and sell dogs!!

magnolia74 · 23/02/2010 21:22

Sorry i meant anyone without a licence.

I'm a guide dog puppy walker and these attacks are unfortunately on the increase. I know of one fully blind lady who was at our workshop a couple of times and she told of an experience when out with her dog. Of course think of this as happening when you are without one of the main senses as well - she was walking from her house to the shops and suddenly a dog came up to her dog, very hyper but thankfully not aggressive. It wasn't on a leash, there was no owner around and she had to wait until a passer-by rescued her as her guide dog couldn't move because of this other dog. In the group I'm with alone there have been a couple of cases of other dogs turning on a guide dog pup.

It is heart-stopping to think what could happen but there are people who have no regard for dog welfare, the idiot with that dog was drinking and naturally the dog wasn't on a leash. One of those status dogs no doubt.

I do know that the dog in that particular incident did make a full recovery and amazingly is still working, which is so unusual as there have been a couple of pups I've known who completely lose all confidence after another dog has gone for them.

It appears the youth was also cautioned under the dangerous dogs act and it was a pitbull cross Whats the bloody point of banning breeds if they are still fecking breeding.

and the question has to be wtf the dog was doing off a lead on an underground station. to the track. Recently a dog came up to mine on Reading station and it wasn't on a lead. It wasn't agressive but the pure stupidity of allowing any dog to walk free in a place like a railway station astounds me.

I'm amazed the dog is still working as well tbh.

My first guide dog was attacked by a staffy outside my house and it was terrifying. Luckily dh was with me and he battered the dog over the head with his laptop and then the owner came out - she was looking after the dog for her mum and was mortified.

This is awful, its horrible to have that completely helpless feeling when your dog is being attacked (my Staffy got set upon and I was devastated) but I cant imagine how terrible it was for the owner to not be able to do anything about it and not be able to see the extent of injuries. Im actually close to tears at the thought.
