Hard-working families will not be found with the smug mums

"Reasons why the internet is a waste of time, part 74. Apparently the main political parties are taking their campaigns online to target, well, people like me. I'm a mum, you see, and mumsnet.com, the website for middle-class parents who want to know whether Steiner is better than Montessori, or how to get that fiddly fifth daily portion of veggies into their little darling, is the latest battleground between the Tories and Labour."

"Both are running adverts claiming that only (insert name of party here) is behind the hard-working family. The only problem is, I'm too busy actually being a hard-working parent (both at home and in an office) to sit poring over worthy book-group forums and advice on how to do a weekend break to New York en famille... If Dave or Gordon wants my vote, they can tell me to my face, not hide behind the skirts of the smug mums."

Rather jolly cheeky

Lisa, are you me? I'm a hard working parent at home and in an office. Oh no, can't be, I don't write stupid columns and I feckin hate mango.

'Reasons why the internet is a waste of time' - great thing to put on the internet!

stealthsquiggle · 11/02/2010 10:15

Aitch - I am intruiged now - what is the scientific test for actual smuggery in a quote - or is it at the discretion of the Editor?

PuppyMonkey · 11/02/2010 10:18

Oh, is The Independent still going?

Hulababy · 11/02/2010 10:20

I mumsnet. I obviously don't work hard enough. Oh wait - that's right, I know I don't work hard enough, lol!

Or maybe I just make time for work and play?

No, strike that - I just don't work hard enough.

Isn't that what DHs are for?

cakeywakey · 11/02/2010 10:24

Meh

DorotheaPlenticlew · 11/02/2010 10:30

She's obviously too busy to actually investigate the full range of threads on here. Just dismiss all those inconvenient MNers who don't fit your stereotype, eh Lisa? Who cares about them anyway, the ones who are on here asking for help because they can't cope, or support with all sorts of stuff? The ones who aren't middle-of-the-road middle-class blah blah blah?

Or the ones seeking bumsex advice

If Xenia is not too busy to MN, how can anyone else be?

weegiemum · 11/02/2010 10:35

Wheras I am too busy Mnetting to be busy!

gave up reading the Indy ages ago after backing away in horror from their comment boards... more right wing and reactionary than the daily mail as far as i can tell, no wonder they've got such ridiculous columnists!

Bonsoir · 11/02/2010 10:45

Life's a competition and everyone's at it. This journalist is too busy working to MN. That's her competition and if that's what makes her feel good about life, so be it!

There are far more perverse forms of competition than that - how about "I'm too virtuous to compete"

DaisymooSteiner · 11/02/2010 10:47

LOL at Steiner vs Montessori. She clearly hasn't spent much time on here has she?!!

Flightattendant · 11/02/2010 10:48

ANYONE who uses the term 'little darling' in a disparaging tone makes me retch.

DaisymooSteiner · 11/02/2010 10:49

"Soon enough, my 11-year-old daughter had sneaked the fruit into the other room, where the children ate up every scrap."

And we're the smug ones?! PMSL

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 11/02/2010 10:49

Take no notice. She obviously doesn't get Mumsnet and is probably pissed off that we didn't bow down to her and agree with everything she said.

bellissima · 11/02/2010 10:53

I thought the very definition of 'multi-tasking' was to be able to do a job and come on MN...

(looks over shoulder to see whether anyone noticing)

Miggsie · 11/02/2010 10:59

I bet her kids all read Harry Potter at age 7.

If she's anything like the journo's I used to work with, she doesn't have time to mumsnet as she too busy down the pub.

Note to lawyers: allegedly

Merrylegs · 11/02/2010 11:04

It does reinforce the view though, that to a depressingly large amount of people - women included, 'mum' is a dirty word, to be dismissed and derided. If this site was called, say Twitternet, would it still be labelled smug and pointless?

passmyglassplease · 11/02/2010 11:31

I is working class.

Don't read the Independent as it's far to boring and full of smug middle class journalists. (sorry to all those mn journos)

mistlethrush · 11/02/2010 12:14

Passmyglassplease - but I'm sure that any mn journos aren't 'smug' as well as middleclass anyway

therealbanksy · 11/02/2010 12:25

What do they say? All publicity is good except your obituary? All she's done is highlight the fact that the mumsnet brand is as strong as ever. You should all be pleased. I still don't like the fact that this site is called mumsnet, but as a dad who works about 55 hours a week, I'm still able to find time to post the odd comment. Must be the male ability to multitask!

therealbanksy · 11/02/2010 12:26

So yaboo sucks to you, Ms Markwell

OrmRenewed · 11/02/2010 12:31

I'm not wearing a skirt!

MitsubishiWarrioress · 11/02/2010 12:45

I am not wearing anything... I was too busy MNing to get dressed. The DC's went to school in their pyjamas and the school run was soooo embarrassing...
