humptynumpty · 18/01/2010 10:17

here is a link which shows that lots of crime in Strathclyde involves people drinking buckie...
Have no idea what the attraction of buckie is, I tried it and it is pure nastiness. Also is wierd because until we moved to scotland i never met anyone who drank it

Im just looking for an excuse to post this profane little linky

COI - born in glasgow, have a sense of humour

stickylittlefingers · 18/01/2010 11:37

I only just found out that it is considered an "ard" drink... I thought it was just a thing some sweet old monks made in a pretty place near where I grew up.

Does Lindisfarne mead get the same treatment? Why in the world is Buckfast Abbey's wine at the centre of this? Seems very odd to me!

humptynumpty · 18/01/2010 12:26

lol sticky
thats hilarious!!

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 18/01/2010 12:28

duh! it is cheap.

wukter · 18/01/2010 12:30

It was the drink of choice for students in Galway in the old days. A different sort of drunk to ordinary alcohol. Rocket fuel.
Nights out were never samey when Bucky was involved.

humptynumpty · 18/01/2010 12:31

It's actually not any cheaper than other drinks so far as I can tell. I mean similar price to 20/20 maddog etc...
Honest, where I grew up down south, nobody touched that, white lightening cider, special brew, mad dog, cheap spirits from lidl or similar but not buckie.

humptynumpty · 18/01/2010 12:32

In our local off license it is rationed, 2 bottles per customer otherwise they can't keep up with demand

Drink of choice amognts skint teenagers in Northern Ireland when I was a young'un too .

Anyone else remember the story about the numbers on the bottle tops being indicative of the strength?!

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 18/01/2010 12:34

i think per volume of alcohol it is one of the cheaper ways to get off your tits

BunnyLebowski · 18/01/2010 12:35

And pingviner that link is brilliant

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 18/01/2010 12:38

snurk @ pingviner while pretending to disapprove

scanty · 18/01/2010 22:35

thing is people in the England (perhaps more to the South) have usually no idea what Buckie is and the social problems it's linked to. They might have heard of the Abbey and of their Tonic Wine but that's usually it. Remember reading somewhere that something like over 85% of their sales is in the West of Scotland (can't confirm that figure but it was a huge percentage). Remember going into a corner shop outside in my home town and they were selling basket giftsets of several bottles of Buckie and some packs of fags - LOL!

humptynumpty · 18/01/2010 22:45

that's exactly what i thought scanty I was totally when we moved to west scotland seeing the number of people drinking it, i was like wtf is that about...
Is a real problem around here at least. Always a comedy moment watching kids drinking buckie on a wall in the street and the police come along and pour it down the drain in front of them!!
These kids are seriously stupid, don't drink it in public you idiots!!

well I grew up just outside Glasgow so it really was part of the culture (I never felt the need to partake thankfully, not Buckie anyway!!) If you grow up and live only in one place, you think everyone else is on the same wavelength. The other thing that surprised me when I moved south was that again most folk had no idea about how hard Scotland had it under the tories (I moved to a town with practically zero unemployment) with all the industry, mines closing etc. They also had no clue about the Catholic/Protestant divide which was quite nice to be somewhere where that was never an issue.

humptynumpty · 18/01/2010 23:11

sorry scanty, misread what you wrote, but you are right, people often have no idea what it is like to grow up in different areas of the same country, is wierd!!

Yep, the programme that was on tonight showed that 43& of juvenille crime involving alcohol, involves Buckfast.....and yet it only accounts for about 0.5% of total alcohol sales in Scotland. It's mind boggling.

SqueezyIsStartinAResolution · 18/01/2010 23:21

whoops, 43%

chippy47 · 18/01/2010 23:42

My Uncle was the monk at the Abbey responsible for making it for many years (now deceased). As such we were brought up on the stuff (plenty of 5 litre vats brought as presents and back from holidays in Devon).
Always knew it was big in Scotland (there is a bottle on the fireplace in Trainspotting -after they have all been on the lash in
London) and this was confirmed when I moved to Edinburgh -first night with no food and went to the chippy to see bottles of the stuff next to the Irn Bru (and had my first experience of salt and sauce!).
You can get it in most Tescos next to the Sanatogen tonic wine. It is cheap and has the X factor!

mummysgoingmad · 19/01/2010 00:01

I have no idea why people drink it, its vile!! it tastes like cough medicine. I think the reason why teenagers drink it is the way it makes them feel compared to normal alcohol, its all do to with the caffine in it. Effectivly its taking upper and downer drugs in the same go, which is never a good idea! If it was all about the cost, you could get 3 litres of cider for cheaper in most places, but you need to drink more and wont get the same effect.

sb6699 · 19/01/2010 00:18

Probably showing what class of girl I am - but I actually know of a pub that sells Buckie by the measure on the gantry!

Scanty - I now live pretty far south of the border and they still have no clue about unemployment/social problems up north.

sb6699 · 19/01/2010 00:24

Just re-read that post and it sounded as if I was being rude about those south of the border.

Should have clarified that I also live in a town with zero unemployment, where it is considered within the norm to have independent means and is generally very privilidged. I do think however that being in this position they are not only unaware of the problems in Scotland but of the "less well off" areas even nearby.

DollyPS · 19/01/2010 01:32

Chippy what Tescos sell it where you are as I have never seen it for sale here in a Tesco at all.

Its the local shops that sell it here.

Its minging stuff alright but gets you pissed very quickly hence why the younger uns drink it.

The age group for it is 13-25 age group.

Sadly thoughs figure will be correct so sad as I live in Scotland well the Ayrshire belt at any roads.

littlemissfixit · 19/01/2010 14:56

sb6699 - i would be surprised if you told me that the pub that sells buckie is an establishment that you didn't have to wipe your feet on the way out. I went into a pub in kilmarnock that sold buckie by the glass. I took one look around me and ran walked back out

DollyPS · 19/01/2010 21:40

Did they really do you remember the name of the place by any chance littlemissfixit
