Haiti - Damage on par with the 2004 Asian tsunami - how to help

Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world, life there was already harsh.

Now with one in three Haitians affected by the earthquake, the prospect of improvement just got much worse.

The harrowing pictures on TV cause distress, it is easy to turn off, to turn away.

We should not.

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) is already taking donations through a special phone line, 0370 60 60 900, and through its website www.dec.org.uk, and tomorrow it expects to launch a television appeal
Please donate what you can, either to the DEC or to other aid relief agencies.

Oxfam

Unicef

Save The Children

Stewiegriffrinsmum - good idea, I will do the same when I get a chance (just been to pick up the dd's so chaos now for a while!).

One of my friends is in DR and used to work for Oxfam, I think she has done some work in Haiti. She had a link on her FB site where people could donate foodstuff etc which I guess will be taken over the border. In a way it must be nice to be able to do something more tangible than just donate money.

Still I guess the aid agencies know what they are doing and what they really need is money.

A final bump before I go out again.

jackstarbright · 14/01/2010 22:22

Thanks for the link MmeLindt.

Octo- As long as you put your dh's name as the donor. You shld be O.k. Not that I'm a tax expert.

CHOOGIRL · 14/01/2010 22:30

Just donated.

maggiethecat · 14/01/2010 23:22

Donated through DEC and it took about 1.5 minutes.
Please keep the momentum going. Although times are hard, I think that if I can still manage eating out occasionally or the odd bit of retail therapy then I can make a donation.

claraquack · 14/01/2010 23:49

Bump again.

No reply to my request for this thread to be a sticky or for a link to be added to the site so I will just do what I can to keep bumping.

Estimates of dead now 45 - 50,000

midnightexpress · 15/01/2010 00:06

Does anyone know if there are any collection points for clothes or blankets? I have recently had a big clear-out of children's stuff and would be delighted to donate it. The hospital situation looks just grim - no medecine, nothing. Those poor people.

MmeLindt · 15/01/2010 05:58

American Express, MasterCard and Visa say they will waive transaction fees when people use credit cards to donate to charities helping in Haiti, according to CNN's Jessica Yellin. Any transaction fees already collected in those transactions will be given to the charities, the credit card companies say.
