Yes indeedy. Good news. Though wonder if it will just mean the Chinese govt blocking it completely?

JustineMumsnet · 12/01/2010 23:35

Yes think they might get chucked out...

Do you think there's any chance Chines businesses may have become google-dependent during the time google's been available?

I'm not entirely sure what I think about the all-conquering-ness of Google. But Google takes on China ... . Goodness!

This might be interesting.

Callisto · 13/01/2010 09:19

This is excellent news and great that a multi-million corporation has taken a moral stand rather than just thinking about shareholder profits. If only more big corporations could be like this an awful lot of misery would be averted.

Callisto · 13/01/2010 09:21

And the Chinese govt will not like this one little bit. They are extremely sensitive to criticism from the West.

PeachyWillNeverVoteBNP · 13/01/2010 09:29

I expect they'll get closed down

But I think Google are great for doing it, genuine admiration

BadgersPaws · 13/01/2010 09:30

Google have been censoring the Chinese version of their web site for a few years so now that they've finally decided not to do that I'm not sure they deserve a "bravo", rather I think they should get an "about bl**dy time".

Yes they probably will now be blocked, which it was happened before and what has been happening to their international sites when you try and access them from within China.

Still on the slightly positive side they weren't as bad as Yahoo who quite happily gave the Chinese Government information on the identity of dissident users.

PeachyWillNeverVoteBNP · 13/01/2010 09:32

Surely even a belated good deed is a good deed nonetheless?

Although agree about Yahoo

ShutUpandDrinkYourGin · 13/01/2010 09:34

interesting that they don't like theft of their own IP...

hbfac · 13/01/2010 09:38

Yahoo handed details over?

BadgersPaws · 13/01/2010 09:57

Yes Yahoo has handed over details of Chinese dissidents and journalists to the Chinese authorities.

As an example Shi Tao was a journalist who forward on to human rights groups an email from the Chinese Government which told journalists not to cover any protests during an anniversary of the Tiannmen Square massacre.

The Chinese Government got their hands on the email and asked Yahoo who sent it.

Yahoo coughed up the journalists name.

The journalist got 10 years.

A member of the US Government put it quite nicely when he said "technologically and financially you are giants, morally you are pygmies"
