OAA Apologise for "Career Women Make Bad Mothers" Campaign

1280 replies

OAA · 06/01/2010 16:16

The OAA are running a campaign to demonstrate the power of outdoor advertising to drive people online. This is being done in conjunction with a new website called ?Britainthinks.com? which encourages debate amongst the people of Britain.

We regret any misunderstanding that led to feelings of offence on the part of members of the Mumsnet community.

The intention of the website is to generate debate by posing questions that are deemed to be socially relevant by members of society.

We did not intend to cause any offence and we would stress that the questions posed were not the opinions of the OAA or any of its members.

Three posters were designed to initiate the debate using sport, life and politics and these are supported by dozens of other questions on the website itself.

Regrettably the question relating to ?career women? has caused offence and the OAA unreservedly apologises to anyone who has been offended. This was not our intention and, to ensure that this misunderstanding does not persist, instructions have been given to remove this poster.

Subject to the vagaries of the weather, all copy will be removed as soon as possible. The sites currently carrying this poster will be either blanked-out or carry one of the other designs. The poster will also be removed from the ?Britainthinks.com? website. All Digital posters have already been removed.

MrsB for prime minister. And queen. And to win the X-factor. And anything else going.

And to her poetry posse and the MN15 - well done! Where else could we get that mixture of righteous anger and fabulous humour?

Huge kudos to MNHQ for their warmth, steadfastness and patience as we gave them some headaches in their first working week of the year.

Thanks to to all the journos and bloggers who picked up the story.

Checking in after an absence overnight and in total agreement with the conclusion emerging overnight - let's decline, encourage something charitable and go back to lighter topics like MILs and SILs from hell, unreasonable schools and new year's resolutions.

Lovin' it here.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 09/01/2010 14:45

don't be silly, dittany.

i am surprised that there hasn't been a new poster called FawcettSoc popping up to advise or congratulate. because this is firmly their department, and if they're good at their jobs they will be aware of what's gone on. if i was part of an organisation such as theirs, i'd think that mners would be good allies, if not members.

HerBeatitude · 09/01/2010 14:48

Don't think we can donate to Object because they're not a charity are they? They're a pressure group. Or is that wrong I'm not sure.

MadameDefarge · 09/01/2010 14:52

having thought about it, I think Kidscompany would be great. I have seen first hand the work they do with children, and as mothers children do matter to us (when they aren't getting in the way on MNetting, obviously)

And they are seriously underfunded.

Swedington · 09/01/2010 14:56

Aitch - they don't have computers in yurts.

Dittany - If I called you a militant feminist would you be pleased? I'm pretty sure I've observed someone call you that on a thread before and you complained. So why do the Fawcett Society have those awful t-shirts that say "I have militant tendencies".

No wonder they aren't getting their message across.

Swedington · 09/01/2010 14:58

Sorry the yurts thing was meant to be a joke but it looks a bit stooopid and 'hangy' now.

Apolgies.

MadameDefarge · 09/01/2010 14:58

aw, swedes, lets not have fisticuffs or MN Linen-washing on such a promising, and public thread, eh?

bibbitybobbitysantahat · 09/01/2010 14:58

Womens Aid?

Did it used to be called Refuge?

Anyway, the charity that provides safe houses for women escaping dv.

Time for kumbaya, surely?

Swedington · 09/01/2010 15:20

Yes quite so. I am leaving this thread now. I think MrsBaldwin's suggestions are great and I'm sure whatever you all decide will be great.

Good luck with it, all of you.

MD...haven't been following this as have busy on another thread.....but tell me

Does tapping out a few emails to get some rather boring advertising removed mean you're all modern day suffragettes.?

Did anyone chain themselves to railings..?

ha ha ha

MadameDefarge · 09/01/2010 15:28

I'd chain myself to you any day, lovey! If only to infuse you with my righteous thoughts by osmosis...

bibbitybobbitysantahat · 09/01/2010 15:32

Ahem, I seem to have joined the thread in the midst of a heated discussion between one or two, but just wondered if anyone saw my suggestion of Womens Aid for the charity donation?

Thank you .

MadameDefarge · 09/01/2010 15:33

Women's Aid already on the table, bibs....as well as Shelter, Fawcett Society (which is causing some vexation for some reason) and my personal offering of KidsCompany..

daftpunk · 09/01/2010 15:38

Listen MD...I'm really very intellectual..my background is in research..

I have researched every southern fried chicken shop in London..

you wanna piece of dixie fried chicken at 3.00am in Hackney..I'm your man

cos dat's what it's all about...

bibbitybobbitysantahat · 09/01/2010 15:41

Ah thanks MD.

And good call re. Kids Company.

MadameDefarge · 09/01/2010 15:42

DP, Alan Davies and Stephen Fry, ok? Remember?

BecauseImWorthIt · 09/01/2010 15:44
Hmm
morningpaper · 09/01/2010 15:45

Swedes: Millicent Fawcett was a moderate suffragist who the Fawcett society was named after. Therefore the tee-shirt means "I have sympathy with a moderate suffragist". It's a bit worrying if you find that somehow offensive.

I would rather we didn't send Beta to a company with a large advertising budget because that is sort of like telling MN off by sending them to Gok Wan's house for a tea party.

MadameDefarge · 09/01/2010 15:46

Sorry, BIWT, getting thread confusion.

morningpaper · 09/01/2010 15:49

KidsCo sounds good

morningpaper · 09/01/2010 15:53

wow their expenditure was 7.5 million last year

these charities are huuuge

no small ones?
