OAA Apologise for "Career Women Make Bad Mothers" Campaign

1280 replies

OAA · 06/01/2010 16:16

The OAA are running a campaign to demonstrate the power of outdoor advertising to drive people online. This is being done in conjunction with a new website called ?Britainthinks.com? which encourages debate amongst the people of Britain.

We regret any misunderstanding that led to feelings of offence on the part of members of the Mumsnet community.

The intention of the website is to generate debate by posing questions that are deemed to be socially relevant by members of society.

We did not intend to cause any offence and we would stress that the questions posed were not the opinions of the OAA or any of its members.

Three posters were designed to initiate the debate using sport, life and politics and these are supported by dozens of other questions on the website itself.

Regrettably the question relating to ?career women? has caused offence and the OAA unreservedly apologises to anyone who has been offended. This was not our intention and, to ensure that this misunderstanding does not persist, instructions have been given to remove this poster.

Subject to the vagaries of the weather, all copy will be removed as soon as possible. The sites currently carrying this poster will be either blanked-out or carry one of the other designs. The poster will also be removed from the ?Britainthinks.com? website. All Digital posters have already been removed.

Dittany I'm typing on an iPhone and getting v dirty looks from my family.

Shelter - immediate need greater and as Aitch says a really good fit re bus stations etc.

I think a womens charity will look really lame. You might think it keeps the scope of sexism on the agenda but most peoplecare going to glaze over and switch off. It's so predictable.

MadameDefarge · 09/01/2010 13:20

And so they should. I don't suppose anyone at the Fawcett society is reading their clipping service offerings of a weekend, and their name has only recently been mentioned on this thread.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 09/01/2010 13:21

nonsense, mp, all it takes is a free google alert for the term 'sexist'.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 09/01/2010 13:22

or reading the fooking GUARDIAN, which i would bet my children they buy every day.

or sitting on a BUS in the last few days, getting pissed off by the stupid campaign and googling it.

DorotheaPlenticlew · 09/01/2010 13:25

Fawcett (small, relevant) or Shelter (neutral, mainstream, relevant in different way) both sound good to me for different reasons ... women-specific charity or slogan, I am less convinced about 'cos I doubt it would have the hoped-for effect in this situation.

In any case, I still feel we should pass on our suggestions, and then leave it to Beta to decide/make it happen if they are so inclined.

MarshaBrady · 09/01/2010 13:27

Out of the two I prefer Shelter.

Well I'm a member of Fawcett, so I count as being here

The Shelter account is probably fairly valuable to an advertising agency as it worth several million a year, so I'd rather that we didn't give (anyone) a free opportunity to impress them as it could land (someone) a nice little earner in the long run

But I'm happy to go with the majority opinion

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 09/01/2010 13:33

have you contacted your leaders to tell them of this grassroots campaign?

morningpaper · 09/01/2010 13:33

(If (anyone) lands a multi-million pound account as a result of this then the sound of champagne popping would be a tad grating)

morningpaper · 09/01/2010 13:34

No I haven't Aitch ... better for MNers to decide really innit?

Swedington · 09/01/2010 13:34

Please let it be Shelter it was minus 22 a night or two ago.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 09/01/2010 13:35

anyway i must go, i have parties to attend and all that.

i wasn't involved in the campaign as i was otherwise engaged that day so i'd take any steer on this from mrsb, it's her baby.

i want what mrsb wants. she had me at 'let's dump shitty nappies on their heads'.

SoupDragon · 09/01/2010 13:38

swedes, it's unimaginable, isn't it?
and i suppose i just thought that fawcett might naturally be interested in this sort of thing, mp. it's a brave new world, the internet. hence garry's big plan to use buses to move people to post on it.

Swedington · 09/01/2010 13:40

Tory Party or Shelter

I don't think it's relevant how large shelter is or how big their ad budget. Isn't it a bit catsbumface to be more concerned with limiting the upside for other parties than the huge potential good?

MadameDefarge · 09/01/2010 13:42

ooh, I'm liking centerpoint, but fear it is a tad London centric...

MadameDefarge · 09/01/2010 13:44

well, we could kill two birds with one stone with shelter, as I am sure a part of their remit is rehousing women and children....maybe they already have a media thing for that? so we could do women and shelter at the same time?

Swedington · 09/01/2010 13:45

I loathe the idea of the Fawcett soc. It's political and I think we should steer clear of that.
