Cleaners more valuable to society than bankers

I agree with that assessment. Still, given the choice of being a wbanker or a cleaner, I guess I would choose the former so that I can make enough money to live comfortably. At least I would be governed by my personal moral code to treat others with dignity, respect and honesty which is more can be said for a lot of bankers (and before anyone jumps down my throat, I know some decent bankers exist).

Nice one, love it.

Chimes with me, you know when something "feels" correct.

I liked the comments about advertising execs...then I thought...if everyone in advertising just evaporated, what would the net effect be?

I mean, would we miss them? Really?

Pixel · 16/12/2009 16:06

Ah, that explains this

oh wow a report that tries to turn society on it's head and show us how messed up societal values are.
do they fuck contribute more than bankers to the world economically.
i wonder how much value people who waste their time making stupid studies and trying to pass them off as somehow valid contribute economically?

VirginPeachyMotherOfSpod · 16/12/2009 23:23

Society is a system

bankers need cleaners, childcare workers, Tas, shop assstants and the low paid occupations

The lowerpaid need bankers (the good ones anyway) to make the money work

If we could alla dmit we're interdependent it'd be a nicer world

but all we get is 'well you could have had thisif you worked ahrd enough / studied at school etc

Well there willalways be mroe high paid jobs than low

But most high paid people rely on legions of low paid people to survive, look after their kids, be able to work.

So we should all stop stuffing ourselvesabout how much better we are and start appreciating we all work together, frankly

WilfSell · 16/12/2009 23:46

mayorquimby in fact, the 'knowledge economy' including Thinktanks, universities, and other people who do research, as well as lots of other things, is thought to generate 40-50% of UK GDP.

Cambridge University alone represents a contribution of billions to the UK economy. The NEF aren't quite at that level but nevertheless what they have to say is widely reported and often respected. They're not idiots, just because you don't like what they're saying.

lottieC · 17/12/2009 00:12

yep, becos cleaners know how to rake the money in!

I would have more respect for high earners like bankers if they acknowledged how dependent they are for their lifestyles on the low paid workers in society. However, too many of them behave as if society should be grateful for their existence and that their success is down to their hard work only, as if they are the only ones who ever work hard.

We are all dependent upon one another in one form or another and as someone who is both a scientist and works in the knowledge economy, thank you Willsell for your timely posting.

My parents came from Jamaica in the 1960s and like many, did all the low paid jobs. They contributed to the economic success of the UK but rarely are their contributions ever acknowledged or even appreciated. At least they always slept well at night knowing that the money they earnt was done so honestly and without causing misery to someone else.
