A mother accidentally smothered her baby daughter to death on a flight after she fell asleep while breastfeeding.

The four-week-old girl was travelling with her Egyptian mother from Washington DC to Kuwait when the tragedy occurred on November 24.

Officers from Scotland Yard's Child Abuse Investigation Team are now dealing with the incident.

The Association of Breastfeeding Mothers said: 'Sitting up in bed while holding your baby is very dangerous, especially if you fall asleep.'

In 2004, Briton Lisa Briggs smothered her baby as they slept less than three years after losing another child to a similar tragedy.

Miss Briggs, 23, fell asleep while feeding five-week-old Keitha and woke in the morning to find her lifeless by her side.

Miss Briggs had lost her four-week-old
daughter Cerese in identical circumstances.
However the Royal College of Midwives said in 2006 there are some benefits for breastfeeding mothers to share a bed with their babies, and a blanket message advising them not to do it could be counter-productive.

Melanie Every, a regional manager for the Royal College, said: 'We know that there are many, many cultures and many, many women who will continue to share beds with their babies, even when they are advised not to do it.

'Now, knowing that, it's important to give them advice on the safest possible way of doing it, rather than just saying don't do it.'

Babies can die of suffocation when their airways are obstructed by lying against their mother - a phenomenon known as 'overlying'.

She was in business class.

sherby... that link was vile. How can people hate so much?

Where do they think new people come from anyway?

imoscarsmum · 04/12/2009 16:13

really wish I hadn't clicked on that link - am very sad there are people like this out there .
The language sounded american (hopes there's a huge body of water separating us)

sherby, I checked out that child-free forum too, and I would call those people something a lot worse than 'fraky'. They sound downright nasty and cruel. They don't seem to care at all that a baby lost its life and that a mother is in mourning. I thought I'd heard it all and that very little could shock me....this site certainly did just that....

*freaky

Soupdragon I don't understand that picture either. What is the feeding bottle for?

I seem to remember reading somewhere that it's not a good idea to take a newborn on a flight. Something about the quality of the circulating air not having enough oxygen or something and a danger of apnoea.

Here's something about it that I've just googled.
Effects of 15% oxygen on breathing patterns and oxygenation in infants

I don't understand how this is physically possible. When you b/f on a plane, even in business class (why is this relevant anyway ) it would be sitting up.

In any case, would an autopsy be able to distinguish between SIDs and suffocation?

MamaGoblin · 08/12/2009 19:49

Terrible story, and although the DM article now has references to the ABM removed, it's still badly phrased. ILanaK, I'm sorry your words were garbled by their rubbish journo.

Shouldn't have clicked on the link to the childfree hate site. I try to forget that these people exist. Freaks.

I think it is impossible not to fall asleep when breastfeeding a baby several times in the night - I have fallen asleep sitting in bed, lying down in bed, and sitting in a chair.

What else can you do when you are so completely knackered??

It is ridiculous to suggest that you should stay awake at all times while feeding your baby else they will die from suffocation.

Why can't people just leave us mothers alone?

I will never forget the sheer terror I felt one night when I woke up, sitting up in bed one night - looked over at the clock and saw that an hour had passed while I had fallen asleep feeding DD, found her on my lap, felt her face and she was cold. Thank goodness she was just a bit chilly because she was outside the covers.

I can't describe the feeling I had for those brief seconds. I really thought I'd killed her.

It made me petrified to feed her in bed again but I still did it. I never managed to feed lying down so it was always a case of hoiking her out of her basket and putting her back in when she was done.

Poor, poor woman and her family
