I may be playing Devils Advocate here, but since all schools/teachers/anyone who comes into distant contact with anyone under the age of 18 are subject to checks, and anyone else who even glances at a(n unrelated)child is now subject to checks, and given that most child sexual abuse occurs within the family, and given that (in the US, in particular) some people deliberately choose to home educate rather than allow their children to hear about alternate philosophical/religious attitudes...

... Well, a bit of legislative intervention
sounds Ok to me.

I believe that the vast majority of people in the UK who HE are utterly sound, but I worked with a family who thought that having sex with children was fine; that's how they lived. Had they chosen to HE, that would not have been picked up.

I would suggest it's probably nothing to worry about anyway, my neighbour was forced to home ed whilst waiting for a school place and called the council weekly to ask for somebody to come and visit to check she was doing all she should have been, nobody came in 18 months.

MillyMollyMoo - you need to read some of the information about this. It certainly isn't something not to worry about! The proposed Bill is definitely something to worry about.

And OLKN - you really think parents should be CRB checked??????

frostyfingers · 30/11/2009 09:28

My DT's are 14 and doing their DofE which involves voluntary work. They've done some gardening for friends who are both over 60 - now who needs protecting from whom - my boys or my friends!

But they do not have the levels of staffing or competenance to see it through.

Who is "he" and what is he "at" again?

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 30/11/2009 15:04

Actually, FlamingoBingo, I think CRB/Disclosure Scotland checks are an utterly pointless waste of time and money, which lead to a false sense of security and deter people from volunteering to work with children.

[Nazi cap] But there may be a case for preventing some people from breeding in the first place.[/Nazi cap]
