A short video in aid of the Sophie Foundation - I know there's a number of MNers who were shocked by this case at the time, so posting the link - it has been reported on the BBC & in the press already, but in case it's been missed...

That was actually very beautiful . . . thanks for posting that link. Very moving indeed!

This happened very near to me.
I hadn't seen the film but that was very moving. I bet it was very hard for her mum to see , i believe she went down to Manchester last night when they were showing it.

Bellared · 27/11/2009 21:26

Thanks Raven, I read recently that it would have been her 23rd Birthday. I'll bet there are a few of us on here who have been bullied because of the way we dress. The animation in the video is fantastic and I hope it helps to spread the message. Me and DH will certainly be buying the wristbands.

An unnecessary waste of a beautiful young life.

RIP Sophie.

Thank you for posting that, I hadn't heard about it but dh had.

Its so very sad, but beautifully done. I really wish them all the best in their work to stamp out prejudice.

As Bellared said, such a horrible waste of a beautiful young life.

I saw mention of the film on BBC news and knew that it would be difficult to watch. But I have now watched it. It was heartbreakingly sad but very beautiful. A few tears shed here. That poor girl and her family and friends.

I was a goth in the early 1980s. Yes, I got the odd sarky comment about how I looked but I never felt threatened. How times change eh?

Thanks for posting the link raven.

That film just brings out so many emotions.
Makes me so angry for Sophie's family. Why do that to someone just because of the way that they choose to dress? Why?

Unfortunately, I've known people get beat up because they were goths etc. I've been punched in the face myself by one of an ignorant group of girls who didn't like the way my friend, who I was with, was dressed . Thankfully, all of these people and myself were ok.

But poor Sophie...

Would you show that film to your dc ?
My ds 7 knows about it as it was in the papers and on our news a lot at the time.

ravenAK · 27/11/2009 22:19

I might, actually, Lilyloo.

My family have been...not involved, obviously, but on the fringes of this ever since it happened.

Dh is the lead singer in a goth band; we go to the Whitby Gothic Weekend twice a year; ds & dd1 were in the news footage of the Sophie memorial/bench dedication in Whitby; I've met Sylvia Lancaster a few times (she is rather awe-inspiring I must say).

So ds (5) in particular is very aware of what happened. I'd probably show him the video & talk it through with him - my main concern would be that he's also a bit preoccupied with death atm, having recently lost an adored gf, & it upsets him already that his teacher (Christian), CM (Muslim), dh (Buddhist) & I (atheist) don't agree on what happens after death. It'll probably provoke some more difficult discussion!

But I don't think there's anything in the animation which is unsuitable for a young viewer - it's very sensitively done.

Umm, well my DS is 22, so yes without question, but for a 7 year old? I'm not sure, it would depend how mature they were. The violence is there but not overtly graphic and there are scenes of spirits rising to heaven. I found the scenes where she is embracing her boyfriend in spirit form very moving.

If your DS has heard the details on the news then there is nothing there that she wouldn't be aware of but it is very, very sad and it could upset her quite a lot seeing it acted out if you like. Hell, it made me cry.

I think if you let her watch it there would have to be lots of talking and support before and after.

Lilyloo · 27/11/2009 22:31

That's what i thought , it has been filmed very well.
Whilst the violence is there i think it isn't too graphic for ds but as you say it does mean a good talk through as well.
I found it very moving without being too graphic iygwim
I think it does open up an important topic of conversation though.
Raven Sylvia has coped remarakbly well. She won local woman of the year here following this.

WickedWench · 27/11/2009 22:43

Apologies Lilyloo. Got my genders a bit mixed up in my post. I meant he not she.

Lilyloo · 28/11/2009 20:37

I did show this to ds today and had a quite well informed discussion about it to. he just asked why which i couldn't really answer

WickedWench · 28/11/2009 21:40

Well there's not a lot you can say really other than that there are some very unpleasant and intolerant people in the world.

Glad you felt able to show it to him though. I think the fact that he asked why indicates what a thoughtful young man you've brought up.
