File sharing may not be the best thing in the world, but jail sentences?? Really??

Also,
"under the new bill the Secretary of State would be able to pass secondary legislation without Parliamentary oversight"

Unfortunately many people just don't see it as wrong when it's basically the same as stealing, you're taking someone's work without any payment. I bet that many people who do do it wouldn't be happy if after a week in the office their boss said to them "I've decided not to pay you, I was only taking your work to try it out, besides you're charging me too much, and it's not as if I've taken any physical object away from you."

However the reaction to it has now gone way too far.

As if annoying messages on DVDs that you can't skip and only affect people who bought it rather than those who copied it aren't bad enough they're now talking about some "3 strikes policy" that has technical holes that you can drive a bus through.

I really dislike people who take other peoples work without payment, however I just don't support these plans and policies.

A jail sentence for it is just insane! As if the "3 strikes" wasn't flawed enough. Do you reckon they'll actually get this through?

No idea, there's some big money behind the push for these policies and lots of friends of Peter Mandelson.

I really just hope that they're making some noise in order to try and make people wake up to the fact that what they're doing is indefensible and wrong.

If it goes through the people that will suffer won't be the really heavy duty pirates who will find plenty of ways to get around any monitoring that is in place.

Oh dear god, as if there weren't more important things to be handing out jail sentences for....

And to be sneaking it through secondary legislation so it doesn't get discussed!

It really is a giant leap too far! Especially, since some artists do not mind it anyway? Was it the Rolling stones, I am thinking of here?

Surely they have better things to do!

There is a lot of underhand activity recently; Look at this They are trying to stop organic veg AND Herbal supplements! All on the quiet!

Sorry for hijack!

And for the music; here is a petition

BadgersPaws · 20/11/2009 16:36

This is just about illegal file sharing, if an artist owns their own music then they can release it however they choose to.

That does highlight a good point, there are an awful lot of perfectly legitimate file sharing that goes on and not just for music either. How on earth will people be able to tell what is legitimate and what isn't?

"How on earth will people be able to tell what is legitimate and what isn't?"

I've always wondered that.

It's a shame, there used to be a really good site which I used, in much the same format as Napster, and artists put their stuff up there to download. I found a lot of bands that I'd never have known about otherwise, and have since bought albums from them. But it closed down around the same time Napster got shut down. Nevermind that it was a good way to get unsigned bands noticed.
