Boozing on the school run

wonder how many of them are wearing pjs and slippers.

TBH if someone is boozing on the school run it indicates that they have issues with alcohol. Banning it will not stop it.

"Some parents have been seen drinking as they walk their children to school as early as 8.30am.
Now, Barnsley's Central Neighbourhood Team is trying to ban public drinking on the streets and parks that surround the school.

Support worker Lisa Hutton said: 'On many occasions I have had to ask parents or carers not to bring alcohol on to the school premises.

"'Quite a few of the parents around here seem to like a tipple in the morning. I think it keeps them going for the day.

'I have seen them drinking from cans as early as 8.30am outside the school and then again in the afternoon as they pick up their kids.

'I'm sure most parents would be staggered by this but 85 per cent of our pupils come from the immediate catchment area which is classed as an area of deprivation.

I did some work in a school where this was not uncommon. There were also heavy drug users who were parents. Several children would regulary be left at school at the end of the day as their parents had forgotten to pick them up as they were too out of it. This was in an area of extreme deprivation. A lot of good support services were in place, but it was very hard to see some of the kids go home at night knowing the life that they led.

Oh my. I naively assumed it was just the afternoon run they were talking about! That's a different kettle of fish altogether!

I'm not sure the word "deprivation" is terribly accurate. A lack of money does not inevitably lead to boozing and drug taking.

I think "this is an area of scummy parents" would be more apt.

if they can afford to booze all day long, I wouldn't call 'em "deprived", I would call them incompetent parents and take their kids off 'em

A school where a friend of mine works reg get calls from parents at the end of the day asking for their kids to be sent to the local 'club as the parents are drinking and cant be bothered to go pick them up
