we were told today
what do you think..

i can see why. the last inset on child protection issues made it seem like a reasonable suggestion. child protection issues always has protecting yourself as a large sub-theme.

i have a FB acct and have the privacy settings to only friends. you have to also scrutinise what applications you allow as the application writers may be able to see your details. i almost downloaded an application once which was written by a Yr 8 I teach.

i wonder if your pupils can find you on Yoville.

NoahFence · 01/09/2009 17:43

hands up anyone who has stalked "researched" their kids teacher on FB - to see them gurning over a bacardi Breezer

It would never ever enter my head to search dd teacher on facebook, what an odd thing to do.

NoahFence · 01/09/2009 17:51

really?

you can fix your settings so that your friends list is not visible in searches, or even so that you won't show up on a search at all.

I know plenty of coppers, teachers, social workers nurses and doctors who have facebook - TBH I appear to exist in some sort of right-on public sector bubble . and we all have facebook, just with proper privacy settings, friends we actually know, and no tits-out profile pics.

NoahFence · 01/09/2009 17:55

no tits out? wotyouilikeeh?

no straighteend hair and wkds?

shame on you.
maybe instead you are holding a large fish like Justine

I just don't know why you would want to search for someone you dont really know on facebook.

I had a very strict no pupil rule on facebook and then relented with a few but blocked them from seeing almost anything. But got fed up of reading their drivel so deleted them all very quickly.

I am careful with my privacy settings and only have quite mundane pictures on there to reflect my dull life as although I set my settings to friends only if people comment on your photos others can see them.

IOnlyReadtheDailyMailinCafes · 01/09/2009 17:59

Most of my FB friends are teachers, nurses, social workers etc, another public sector bubble here.

CheeseandRice · 01/09/2009 18:05

DP is a teacher but has all privacy settings so he doesn't show up in a search of his name. I have it so I appear in a search but no photo and no friends list unless whoever is looking is already a friend.

LadyMuck · 01/09/2009 18:10

But don't you all get a selection of people who you might know to add every time you log on? No need to search. If you do happen to be friends with one teacher (having been to NCT classes with them), then you seem to get offered friendships with all of them (and no, I have not invited any of them!). Given electric blue underwear was on profile pic it would take a less inquisitive person than me to click and see what else was being broadcast to the public (or at least anyone on the London network).

Perhaps it is my settings that are set inappropriately, given I seem to get these suggestions of "people I might know" every log in, but it would suggest that it is very easy to come across info that you wouldn't expect to see.

That said, I must confess that I automatically do a google search on any nanny that I interview. Other than this 22yo I suspect that all of my dcs teachers are too old and staid to have any dodgy photos in digitial format let alone on FB, but you never know!

DaisymooSteiner · 01/09/2009 18:11

One of my former teachers is my FB friend - but then I did know her very well, she came to my wedding, bought presents when my babies were born etc.

IOnlyReadtheDailyMailinCafes · 01/09/2009 18:13

I get friend suggestions but I dont search them.

I do sometimes look at photos that other teachers put up and think .

roisin · 01/09/2009 18:13

I think it's prob sound advice. I do have one, but have privacy settings on it (I think - note to self, must check). I often get requests from students, usually ones who've just left, but I never accept them.

But many of my colleagues, do have students and x-students on their lists. And there is some cross-over on what postings you can see of friends of friends, isn't there? And coments on photos?

One of my bosses posted today how she's not looking forward to going back tomorrow. Now whilst this is completely understandable from anyone within teaching, it's easy to see how it could be misinterpreted in the public domain.

IOnlyReadtheDailyMailinCafes · 01/09/2009 18:16

Yes if I comment on a friend's status/post and she has pupils they will see my comment. If she comments on my photos they will see them.

MarthaFarquhar · 01/09/2009 18:22

If you write on someone's wall, all their friends will see.

If someone comments on your photos, their friends only see if your privacy settings allow.

Each time you add new photos, set the album settings to "visible to friends only".

nymphadora · 01/09/2009 18:24

Roisin HI haven't seen you around for ages!!

roisin · 01/09/2009 18:25

Hiya nymphadora! [waves madly]

NoahFence · 01/09/2009 18:26

I teach (6th form) and have a facebook account. I do not accept current students, but do allow past students to be friends... namely because after two years of teaching them at 3/4 hours a week, I do actually get to know them quite well. Further, my privacy settings are quite strong, and I am very careful about what I put on there. My Dad is my friend on there too - so whenever I put anything up there, I always think to myself 'Am I happy with my dad and X students seeing this?'. If the answer is no, then I delete it. Also, if other people tag me in photos or make comments that I don't want dad/students to see then I delete them. My photos / comments are usually really boring and just relate to my children - so there's never any scandal, and all my ex students are at least 19 years old, so there's no problem. I wouldn't add younger students though, so I think its different when my ex students are usually at university.

Incidentally, whilst I am careful about what I put up, I don't think my students always are - some of their photos and stuff, I think do they really want me seeing this?

NoahFence · 01/09/2009 18:35

wise words re dad

Hands up here for DC teacher stalking on FB (but only after another mum did and told me about the unusual photo). Then we were all egging each other on to send a friend request but we all bottled it.

GertBertandFlirt · 01/09/2009 19:06

I checked out dd's new teacher and she was indeed gurning of a bottle of something .I have dd's old teacher as a friend on my FB she sent me a friend request after she left dd's school.

GertBertandFlirt · 01/09/2009 19:06

Gurning over.

beepbeep · 01/09/2009 19:20

I know someone who has been teaching primary fr a long time, has a lot of ex pupils as friends, but what would bother me if she taught my children is that she has photos of the school assembly on there (including the children obviously), she has no privacy settings as far as I am aware.

NoahFence · 01/09/2009 19:24

everyone gurns or hugs
