Caster Semenya has elevated testosterone levels

Here

Assuming that they are naturally elevated (and there's no reason to think otherwise), don't you think that it's fair for her to compete with other women? Apparently the regulators are now deciding whether this gives her an "unfair advantage" but surely differences in physique and biochemistry are a huge part of any athlete's success? Would an athlete be disqualified for having unusually long legs, or exceptionally large lungs? Why does a natural excess in hormones be different?

"If she was running against men, where would her times place her? Is she top 10/50/100 for her age against men? "

Not sure about "ranking" with regards to age but the men's statistics (world leading/world record/junior mens) are here a long way off.

SomeGuy · 12/09/2009 17:49

There were 50 runners in the mens 800metres WCs. 42 of them ran under 1:49. Semenya ran 1:55. She wouldn't get in the SOuth African mens team.

She could run at minor meets though.

S/he'll probably have made some money out of it, S Africa seems quite upset/protective about it.

alwayslookingforanswers · 12/09/2009 19:34

What money from the international media to portray her/him as a freak

SomeGuy · 12/09/2009 19:41

She's very famous. I expect that can be monetised.

Habbibu · 12/09/2009 21:33

Well, if you see a career as merely a way to earn money, then fine. But I'll be her drive to run and win was based on something other than money.

Habbibu · 12/09/2009 21:33

"bet", I mean.

SomeGuy · 12/09/2009 21:49

Sometimes life is tough. Especially in South Africa.

I fnd the media's attitude and treatment of CS absolutely disgraceful. Her medical condition is not for public sport or voyageristic consumption.

Her dignity, privacy and achievements have been denigrated as well as ridiculed. She is 18yo and her privated medical details are being used for entertainment purposes. She and her family have been publicly humiliated and those responsible are lowest forms of life.

She is 18yo and having to put up with this atrocious treatment in the full glare of the public.

I hope she and her family sue those who are responsible for leaking her private medical details if that is what has taken place. I also hope those responsible are criminally prosecuted too.

Nancy66 · 14/09/2009 10:37

The media are simply covering a big story - that's their job. If this athlete ends up being banned and stripped of her medal than that's very newsworthy.

It's the athletic bodies that have behaved badly by leaking rumours and reports, and the South African government who almostly certainly knew there were question marks over her gender but ignored the issue because they were desperate for a medal.

spokette · 14/09/2009 13:57

The media are printing medical information which has been leaked and the information is private. It is disgraceful, intrusive and immoral. Caster's situation should be dealt with in private.

The media and the athletic body have behaved appallingly in the way they have treated an 18yo whose crime is to be born without the looks to win Miss World!

alwayslookingforanswers · 14/09/2009 14:07

They have had medals before at the World Championships - and won 2 others at the World Championships this time round (another gold and a silver). They also won a medal at the Beijing Olympics - so winning medals is nothing knew.

I doubt them "ignoring the issue" was due to them wanting to win medals, rather than a complete lack of understanding/knowledge about issues such as this.
