I don't think anyone's made a subscription model work financially on the web yet - but I could be wrong? Too many folks are used to getting things for free but maybe that will change in due course. We also don't want to exclude people who can't afford to pay.

But... we will crack the whip wrt private groups which should help.

JustineMumsnet · 14/08/2009 18:49

"I think you just need to decide that you are content to have every word/post (that doesn't get removed) subject to MN use and further use by any blog, FB or twitter user."

Yes Wotzy you do! No one is trying to pretend otherwise - that's what we explicitly make clear in all our notices - you post on here, it's our liability (not yours) and you share copyright of your posts. We have the right to delete your words and/or use them for MN books and publications. Other people have the right to search your posts, link to them, cut and paste them selectively.

(Though it seems the Daily Mail may not have the right to copy whole extracts at least.)

It's the downside of a public board - the fact that folks can search and quote your nicknames. It's a downside of MN that we may use your words and nickname offline in our books - it's how we pay the bills. It's up to you whether you are happy with that - whether you think we're going to be sensitive to your posts in our books etc. It's up to you whether you can live with being searchable and the risk of a journalist using your words to illustrate their articles.

On the upside - Mn provides for free what only an open board can do - volume, speed, immediacy of answers. Lots of new blood, no heirachy of poster, a democratic open to all spirit.

But whether all that is worth the downside, only you can decide.

Until we've built our private boards, though, that's all we can offer.

JustineMumsnet · 14/08/2009 18:57

FlashHarriet - that's exactly what we're working on - we just hadn't thought of charging for private groups tbh because in our head they were based around need and we didn't want to exclude anyone... but it's a thought...

JustineMumsnet · 14/08/2009 18:58

I'm going to catch my train now folks, so not ignoring anyone - back laters.

JustineMumsnet · 14/08/2009 23:12

Fyi re deletions, LH has asked us to delete any posts outing her - which could well be a bit of a futile exercise but the right not to be outed is one we try to uphold for all Mnetters so we're doing our best...

JustineMumsnet · 14/08/2009 23:21

Oops:It's very worrying that MN seem to have absolutely no idea whatsoeverr if they own our posts and can sell them on or not

We know we can sell your posts Oops (not that we did of course in this case) but can random journos is the issue in question? And, the answer, it seems to me, depends on volume.
It's not that clearcut - any number of lawyers/people who sound like they're lawyers seem to have had different opinions on this and the other thread... Mark Stephens, however, seems to think there might have been an infringement of copyright - I will confirm that soonest and then we can decide what to do next.

JustineMumsnet · 14/08/2009 23:29

I'm afraid we can't force anyone to post on MN and nor would we want to - but I have suggested to Leah H that would be much better to come on and talk this through than to have it rumble on and on - it must make pretty horrific reading from her end - I know I'm finding it tough. Whether she comes, though, is completely her choice.

JustineMumsnet · 14/08/2009 23:31

Oh for goodness sake when did we say we thought it was a good business idea??? IT WASN'T OUR IDEA. There feel better for a shout.

JustineMumsnet · 14/08/2009 23:36

Oops:
And justine- fair enough about whether or not you can sell our posts- but whilst you didn't know about the DM/whoever beign allowed to lift whole/part threads- why didn't you ask them not to until you had clarified the situation with your lawyer/the peopel involved?

Because until about 5pm today we thought they could - fair use blah blah. It's all unfolded on this very thread and is there for everyone to see.

As I've said a few times once we've confirmed the very hurried, blackberried legal opinion we've had we'll throw it open to Mnet to decide what next...

So far it seems the majority want us to either have a right of veto or get the column pulled altogether.

JustineMumsnet · 14/08/2009 23:57

We would not have gone to the DM and said why don't you run a column about what's hot on MN. Or the Sun, NoW, Mirror, Express. We agree such an association doesn't sit well with our ethos and it isn't one we would have sought out.

But hand on heart would we like to see such a thing in the Guardian/ Times/ Indy/ S Times/ Observer/ Standard? Yes we would. (And even Mothercare for that matter)

And pretty much every other major website I can think of would be delighted to be regularly featured in any of the above list including the top ones.

Yes we want to spread the MN word - we think MN is a good thing - it's helpful and educating and generally a force for good. The more people who use it, the more chance we have of doing some good and paying the bills.

But yes we would like to have some editorial control - to make sure folks use us well/represent situations properly.

That's MNHQs position as it stands - if everyone thinks that's unethical/wrong/misguided then you better shout - cos we'll have to have a serious rethink about how we're doing things.

JustineMumsnet · 15/08/2009 00:05

KingCanute you'd be surprised by what high esteem the DM is held both by other journos and especially by government. Having a column in the DM about Mn would do no harm, for instance, in getting the powers to take our concerns re the treatment of miscarriage a bit more seriously. But we take all your points about the downside of the association too, they are all very valid.

JustineMumsnet · 15/08/2009 00:07

When I say esteem by the way - I don't mean that journalists necessarily like or agree with what the Mail says and does but most recognise that they do it very professionally.

JustineMumsnet · 15/08/2009 00:10

Sorry Quattro - I thought I did - it's generally our policy to protect MNetters from being outed on the site - in this case, oddly, we're protecting her nickname from being connected to her real life name, rather than the other way round.

We'd do it for anyone - don't see why we shouldn't try to do it for Leah Hardy - though obviously you and others might disagree!

JustineMumsnet · 15/08/2009 00:24

The Sun has naked women on page 3

VVVQ the reason we haven't successfully managed to place even one column in a national newspaper is because we are utterly incapable of deciding which of our enormously talented pool of Mnet writers should get the job of penning it .

And with that, folks, I'm pulling the plug - or at least going to bed. Sleep well all.

JustineMumsnet · 15/08/2009 00:26
