I would have thought she'd LOVE it, as she said she used to hide behind her hair (see the article: Liz Jones gets a haircut). Strange.

I wonder what she was wearing underneath? Also, did she realise that you can lift the veil up to eat? I have seen plenty of hijabbed women doing this. Why not just ask Muslim women about how they feel about wearing hijabs, or is only her opinion valid?

God, that is such utter shite.
Apart form the highly offensive content and the ridiculous associations she has drawn, the writing is so bloody poor. Jesus, I haven't read anything that shite since I worked on the school newspaper back in 1990.
Fucking hell. She is an utterly hateful woman.

edam · 11/08/2009 20:55

She didn't ask any Muslim women because dear Liz doesn't do asking questions or any of that tricky stuff other journalists waste their time on. She writes about me, me, me.

sherazade · 11/08/2009 21:01

oh i know that edam, she doesn't ask anyone anything bar her pets.

wahwahwah · 11/08/2009 21:07

She bought gin and tonic? Duh.

Why did she bother exactly? It's like me wearing ladenhosen around London and writing about my adventures.

Crap and lazy 'journalism'. Like the one in the Times who got a job in a supermarket for 6 months to write about her experiences. Booooooooring.

idranktheteaatwork · 11/08/2009 21:12

Sherazade's fantastic post has absolutely hit the nail on the head in my opinion.

A non-muslim will always feel uncomfortable/marginalised etc wearing a hijab or any of the other methods of covering because they would not be doing it for their faith and cultural reasons.

I find articles like the shite linked to intensely irritating because it is so utterly calculated to stir up the usual misapprehensions around the muslim faith.

Of course there are fundamentalists and of course there is no denying there is oppression in certain countries but to generalise and assume that every woman who covers up is being forced to and feels uncomfortable/clumsy/whatever is highly insulting and completely close-minded.

ffs!I read Liz Jones' book (as a guilty "pleasure")- this is a woman who has by the sound of it been imprisoned by her clothes/appearance for her whole adult life..

oh, the irony!!

The Mail is obsessed with this one..in my free copy (honest!) the other week that twunt Allison Pearson had done one of them "quick!got a deadline!make it up and phone it in" articles about a woman wearing a burka supposedly dodging a fare on the train.Next week there'll be a woman in a burka supposedly vandalising a bus shelter with a lump of concrete, or drowning some kittens in a bag, you mark my words..

God, mn has got my blood pressure up tonite...I only came on here for a quick giggle...

cherryblossoms · 12/08/2009 00:13

Good point re. clothes-irony preciouslilywhite.

PortAndLemon · 12/08/2009 00:55

Perhaps they could cooperate? Liz Jones wears burka and vandalises bus shelter, and Allison Pearson can write about it. Then they can swap.

What's the least likely assignment for Liz?

She'd have a hard time pretending to be married for a week, for instance. Doubt she could find many volunteers...

(Sorry, that is very bitchy, but entertaining story about her poor married neighbour made me think of it.)

Interestingly (well, I thought it was) I am currently in another European city with a relatively large Muslim population. I have seen tons of women wearing headscarves, lots of make-up, the scarf sometimes pushed back on the head, and only one burqa (with the face covered? is that the correct term). However, in the couple of days I've been here; I have not seen a single full on black burqa, whereas in London I see them all the time. Quite a marked difference.
