I saw it in the sun this morning - those poor children - she didn't even have a partner.

bethoo · 16/07/2009 14:12

just read the comments and some good arguements in there.
i cant comment as i personally think it was wrong allowing a woman of that age to have IVF. sorry.

StealthPolarBear · 16/07/2009 14:15

poor woman, and poor twins

BunnyLebowski · 16/07/2009 14:21

Hardly surprising - bound to happen when people nearing the end of their lives do such selfish things.

Those poor babies

bethoo - of course you can comment. Your opinion is just as valid as someone who supports what this lady did.

kidcreoleandthecoconuts · 16/07/2009 14:25

Those poor children.
IMO ridiculous to let a woman of that age have IVF in the first place.

PuppyMonkey · 16/07/2009 14:26

Course, you can get ill at any age.

you can get ill at any age, but the biggest risk factors for lots of cancers is age.
Don't really know how I feel about the whole IVF at 65 thing but it;s incredibly sad.

PuppyMonkey · 16/07/2009 14:47

I don't either Stealth tbh.

But somewhere in the back of my mind, I'm thinking lots of other, younger people have babies for selfish reasons too. Like just because they want one, for instance.

Yes, I also feel that having a child is one of the fundamental parts of life, so it's never as simple as saying "you can't, now get on with your life". Obviously in some situations people genuinely can't, but if possible, they should eb given as much help as reasonably possible. Obviously there has to be cut off points where it's not reasonable though.

juuule · 16/07/2009 14:55

Agree puppymonkey.
And various reasons why a child might not have a parent around throughout their childhood regardless of age.
These children were seemingly loved by their mother and she appears to have made provision for them after she's gone.

It's sad that she didn't live for as long as she was hoping for, though.

I got pregnant unexpectedly at the age of 40, totally unprepared for it, it totally shocked me and DP, no plans in place or anything like that.

We've coped and are v.happy now. But, really, this wasn't the way to have another child. Is that any better than this poor woman is what I wonder...

so is that worse for them than them just never existing in the first place?

EccentricaGallumbits · 16/07/2009 15:11

problem is you are more likely to get ill and die at 69 than at 29 or 39. That's why nature invented the menopause.
It is very sad for those poor orphaned babies though

juuule · 16/07/2009 15:14

"That's why nature invented the menopause."

Ia it?

potatofactory · 16/07/2009 15:16

stupid cow, frankly.

PuppyMonkey · 16/07/2009 15:18

Nice, potatofactory..

OP posts:
EccentricaGallumbits · 16/07/2009 15:19

well yes. to stop women having babies then dying before their offspring are old enough to look after themselves.

BakewellTarts · 16/07/2009 15:22

I don't think thats why the menopause exists. Something I read a while ago suggested that if older women stop having children they can help their daughters raise theirs which gave them an evolutionary advantage. And it doesn't explain premature menopause...

Reading the article she lied and was obviously fit enough top get away with it (assuming her docs aren't stupid). My overriding feeling is that of sadness for her twins to lose their mum so young.

juuule · 16/07/2009 15:22

But didn't people die younger on average in the past, before menopause? and lots died in childbirth?

juuule · 16/07/2009 15:23

Bakewell that's the only theory for menopause that's ever made some sense to me.

PuppyMonkey · 16/07/2009 15:26

Whatever you think about the tactics she used to get IVF etc, the fact is her body successfully got pregnant and produced twins. Life finds a way, as Jeff Goldblum said in Jurassic Park...
