I imagine that £1.5 mill would go a long way towards the chidls care for life, I can understand why soemone might sign a form for wrongful birth in order to secure that

But then I had real problems at the same hospital that I can never prove but suspect in my heart are linked to ds1's SN presentation

that is truly disgusting! That poor boy - imagone knowing your mother would have terminated you

I find it hard to know what to think. Its very sad, but I think 1.5 million pounds would be better spent on services to help all children with severe special needs.

This familly has already had 500,000 pounds which is much more than many families in their position.

If the family wishes their child had never been born then maybe other options need to be looked at for caring for the child. Prehaps the child should be fostered or have shared care.

She's not saying she would have terminated the pregnancy. She's saying that she was never given the option, and that the scans should have picked up the abnormalities.

I understand why she is doing this. They need the money to make her son's life as comfortable as possible.

In my area you still don't get a scan until 20 weeks unless you pay privately. I think this is wrong - surely it is better for all concerned if terminations are carried out sooner rather than later.

I worked with SN young adults back in 1994 so a long time ago, even then palcements cost up to £800 a "week"

Assuming a £1k price tag now, plus the costs of getting a suitable home, educations(again taunton mnoteable for closure of SN schools unless things changes fdramtically since we moved)- it's amazing how quickly this diminishes.

On one hand I can see why she's trying to get funds to support her son but the "wrongful birth" title makes me cringe. It comes across as had she of known about the abnormalities she would have terminated. Obviously I don't know if that is the case or not but that is what is suggests.

Isn't there a Jodi picoult novel about exactly this? One of the ons I havent read yet though. It's what Dh buys me when he doesn't fancy asking the shop satff about the specialist struff I like (that'd be always then!)

Wellt his si the same hospital that told me I was just anxious when I ahd pre-eclampsia (and I ended up fitting and they still were going to sene me home)

My sister received excellent care from them a few years later though so i was hopefuly things had improved.

Yes the new Jodi Picoult book Handle with Care is similar to this but the child in the story has a brittle bone disease. Very good book. I certainly don't agree with the suing part though. Particularly if the family are not struggling to get by.

the childs care will cost a fortune. that is what the money will be used for.

Care and equipment for children with severe SN costs £££££s - haven't you seen the threads on here? I don't blame the parents for trying to get some money to make their family's life a bit easier.

i feel for this family, i really do but from what i gather she was aware that the chances of her having a disabled child were high as her partner suffered from congenital heart defects adn there was spina bifida in the family. did she not mention these facts to her health care provider/mw/gp?

So a disabled partner is fine but a disabled child isn't?

I am sorry she has these extra pressures but even sorrier that she wants to sue the NHS.

Choice and options.

Any woman during pregnancy who finds out her unborn child has those two things. They are given options and make a choice based on information provided.

This womans family had a background of problems, is saying that they should have , especially in her case given both maternal and paternal family history, carried out the nessecarry scans and tests to correctly diagnose her son whilst in utero.

She had her options and her choices taken away,

If she would have found out perhaps she would have terminated, it would be within her rights to, and if she had she would not need this 1.5million, it is because she was told her baby was fine and he was born with these problems that she now needs this money to provide him with a comfatble life.

Heaven knows if I were in the same situation I would do everything I could to provide and make my son comftable.

LeninGrad she won't have, it is a horrendous odeal, you have to talk in dpth about the worst thing that has ever happened to you and it goes on for years. people who think she shouldn't have sued, can I ask you who would pay for this childs care? SS only provide the bare minuim, and you have to fight for that.
