What men prefer, according to the DM

Now before you slate me for reading the Daily Mail (woman hating garbage IMO) a friend sent me this link.

Anyhoo..

men prefer miss average

I'm not sure where to start!

OP posts:

Ugh. Just ugh. That article managed to be offensive to both the model-sized and the 'normal' sized in just about every paragraph. And I didn't read one quote (alright I was skimming) which didn't reek of smuggery. And the thought that it means I'm more attractive to the sorts of men participating in that survey just makes me want to take a bath. Ugh.

monkeytrousers · 16/06/2009 12:30

"But you give a very fixed definiton of what size a woman should be in order to keep her husband happy"

There is a crucial difference between 'should' and 'prefer' - most of us, men and women do not fit a perfect template, which is why average wins out everytime. But average won't be on the pages of your catalogue or in the windows of H&M.

Just becasue we like beauty, apreciate beauty does not mean we cannot appreciate other people on the scale

monkeytrousers · 16/06/2009 12:34

Basically we don't love everyone who is beautiful, but we are more likley to fancy them.

It's perfectly natural isn't it? It's not a betrayal

Well thankfully I don't give a flying toss what men prefer. As I am not average. Way too tall, and a little to slim

I prefer men that aren't 'average' too. God how dull!

I like tall muscular black men. DH ticks 2 out of 3 boxes (is only 5ft 10)

theDreadPirateRoberts · 16/06/2009 12:59

So far the closest I've had to a 'type' personally, is that friends and family wonder what I see in them.... Although I've never dated a man shorter than me (need to have a reason to look up to them )

Lizzylou · 16/06/2009 13:01

I always preferred tall men (over 6ft), broad, big built with dark hair and blue eyes.
DH is 5ft 10.5", blonde, greeny grey eyes and fairly slender, so just shows you really.

Mind you, he always liked petite blondes (am 5ft 9" and brunette)

Makes no difference, does it, it's the person inside wot counts innit?

OrmIrian · 16/06/2009 13:03

Tall men. Have never found a short man attractive. As I'm 5'11" I guess that makes sense . Apart from that not much.

monkeytrousers · 16/06/2009 13:04

You'd be suprised what is included in 'average' Lenin. Very attractive people are in there, tall, short, whatever - most of us are in there. When you see someone not within the average schema however, we all know it, and so do modelling agencies.

ABetaDad · 16/06/2009 13:52

KingRolo - glad I scrolled all the way down my 'I'm On' list and saw your comment.

Seems to have kicked off quite a good debate

OrmIrian - I find all your posts interesting and funny (in a nice way) as they always contain two contradictory points of view and I still have not quite figured out how to read them.

"I don't give a flying toss what men prefer.

BUT

I prefer men that aren't 'average' too.

OrmIrian · 16/06/2009 14:03

That is cos I is a woman and I can multi-task see

But I see no contradiction between my not caring what men think of me and my having a preference for non-average men. Nope still can see it.

ABetaDad · 16/06/2009 14:11

OrmIrian - you always make me think (and scratch my head) too.

KingRolo · 16/06/2009 17:00

BetaDad - "there really is no channel for men to communicate this general reality to women and I wish there were because I feel it would save a lot of unhappiness."

There is, it's here, and you've done it! I just hope you are speaking for all men and not just yourself . To be honest, I think that we all know that it's the media that make women feel the way they do about their bodies, not their husbands and partners.

monkeytrousers · 16/06/2009 20:15

Erm no actually, it;s other women mostly. Have you ever heard of a girl becoming anoraxic after looking at Loaded or Nuts? No, it's the fashion mags, the fashion models, not the glamour girls, who need to be 'shapely' to make the grade.

I hate this ides that women are so passive, they can have no effect on even other women, and that we need to blame men or the 'media'. It's the female editors that are more responsible for unhealthy body images in the media, not men. And the masses of women who buy Heat and OK to scrutinise, fawn over or criticise the bodies of the rich and famous women.

Humans are a competative species. Men kill each other more often, women bitch more often - again, I think we have the better side of that particular bargain.

But being compatative doen;t mean we are only competative. The other side of that coin is co-operation. But there can be no co-operation without competition and vice versa.

I don't think that's anything to be ashamed of.

KingRolo · 17/06/2009 07:48

I get your point MT. The women in the media, the female editors and the writers of some of the more horrific DM stuff, play a huge role. I never implied that the media was exclusively male.

monkeytrousers · 17/06/2009 09:28

I know. I skim read your post and reaslised that after sorry
