I hope it's OK to copy the email I just got onto here - it's so sad, I thought mumsnetters could help ...

Dear Friends, I have just learned that the Nigerian supreme court has upheld the death sentence for Amina Lawal, who was condemned for the crime of adultery. She is to be buried up to her neck and stoned to death. Her death has been postponed for one month so that she can continue to nurse her baby. Amina's case is being handled by the Spanish branch of Amnesty International, which is attempting to put together enough signatures to make the Nigerian government rescind the death sentence. (A similar campaign saved another Nigerian woman, Safiya, condemned in similar circumstances.) The petition has so far (as of April 7th) amassed over 4,100,000 signatures. It will only take you a few seconds to sign Amnesty's online petition.

Go to the web page amnesty
enter your first name in the space marked 'nombre', last name ('apellidos', county/state ('provincia', and country from the drop down box - choose Reino Unido (UK), Estados Unidos (USA), or whichever is appropriate. Then click on 'Seguir' and go to the second page. There you have the option of entering your email address if you wish to receive follow-up information. In any case, be sure to click on 'aceptar' to have your name added to the petition list.

Thanks Tomps. I had heard about this case before but I didn't know about the petition. Duly signed. It's just so unbelievably inhumane, hope the petition makes a difference.

doormat · 02/05/2003 08:27

Just keeping the thread up.

dara · 02/05/2003 09:00

The British Amnesty site says that the hearing was postponed until June 3 due to local elections in Nigeria.

yes, it's real...

Hi, I asked British Amnesty about this and this was the response.

Dear All

Unfortunately the information in the body of this email is inaccurate.

Amnesty International is still awaiting the result of the appeal on the
death sentence on Amina Lawal - and, as you would expect, working hard
behind the scenes to get this dropped. The death sentence has not been
upheld.

The last appeal was - on 25 March 2003 - adjourned until 3 June 2003. The
reason given for the postponement was that the tribunal should have had
five members but only three serving members were available. It was
subsequently postponed until after the elections.

This is not an issue that Amnesty International is currently seeking
publicity on as our first priority is to get a positive result at appeal
hearing.

Apologies for any confusion. I have sent this response to people whose
email addresses were visible but there are clearly many others I have not
been able to reach. I'm happy to answer any queries.

Sorry, but the link doesn't seem to be working.

A friend has just sent me this:

Subject: Fw: DO NOT SEND THIS ! Nigerian appeal for life Amina Lawal
Dear all
Amnesty International anounced that although probably well intentioned the timing of this
email campaign is misplaced as the trial will in fact not commence untill Jan next year
& as it is involved in sensitive negotiations with the new Nigerian government [doubtless as dodgy as the last] it considers this campaign in appropriate and urgently urges people not to forward or sign it at this stage for the sake of Amina Lawal and lets face it they should
know so retract n cancell previous requests folks & will keep u posted

Thought you should know...
