Baby Peter sentences to be reviewed

here

Following complaints by members of the public and organisations such as the NSPCC, the Attorney General is deciding whether to refer this case to the Appeal Court with a view to increasing the minimum tariffs. Baroness Scotland has to do this within 28 days of the date of sentencing.

I'm planning to write to her office to commend her for this course of action. Nothing can turn back the clock on what happened to this little boy, but it looks as though there might be some lasting legacy with proper custodial sentences for child cruelty/murders.

I don't know what the judge was thinking of passing down such lenient sentences. Was he not appalled at the babys injuries, was he not shocked that this went on for pretty much all of Baby P's life, can't he see that they are evil sick bastards. What was his resoning for not passing down the maximum that he could.

They should be locked up for the rest of their natural lives.

But then we are talking about the British Justice system whom I lost faith in a long time ago.

The criminals got indeterminate sentences so will never be released until it can be proven that they are no longer a danger.

I think the problem is people focus on the tariff - which does seem low to a non-lawyer. But it couldn't be proven who killed the poor child so none of them were sentenced for murder.

The boyfriend did get life thought.

But Life in the UK seems to mean about 12 years, and then time taken off for various illogical reasons. Different matter in America.

Maybe clear, headline long sentences might act as a deterrent in these cases? I think at the moment the maximum sentence for causing or allowing a child's death is 10 years which is just disgraceful given the level of cruelty and suffering which can be involved.

Life prisoners who are released aren't free in the way anyone else is though. They are released on licence and can be recalled if there is any reason.

And I'm not sure child abusers - I don't just mean sexual - look at sentences before deciding what they are going to do. Doubt it is as logical as that. Paedophiles who are in contact with other paedophiles might, I don't know.
