OK maybe Jamie Oliver, he is pretty selfless in his food thing. He seems to know how to bring people together.

OP posts:
throckenholt · 22/05/2009 09:19

Billy Connelly and Hugh Fernley Wittenstall (or whatever his name is)
Stephen Fry
Terry Pratchett

Bet none of them would want to do it though.

EachPeachPearMum · 22/05/2009 09:21

This should be in sleb twaddle, not news....

Mitch Benn
Charlotte Green
Jeremy Paxman (can't believe I typed that one)

EachPeachPearMum · 22/05/2009 09:22

Of course, Hugh Grant needs to be prime minister... and B-bob Thornton president

Dumbledoresgirl · 22/05/2009 09:26

Simon Cowell - for his plain speaking. Can you imagine the press conferences? How refreshing they would be1

bagpuss · 22/05/2009 09:31

Ah, Paxo is fab, really nice guy. DH met him on the train a few months back.

Jux · 22/05/2009 09:52

DH and I were talking about this the other day. It really comes down to what sort of politician do you want making decisions for you? In the last 15 years or so we have chosen people mainly for their image rather than for policies, beliefs, intelligence, wisdom etc. If someone gives a good soundbite and makes a good photo they're in.

Having said that, DH thought Bob Geldof would be good as he is already a seasoned campaigner, but it's all very well having celebrities (assuming they want to stand) only they tend to be single issue campaigners. Which might cause huge problems when it comes to all the day to day stuff that needs to be done. How would Bob sort out education - he doesn't actually know anything about it?

Esther Rantzen is standing but I am really glad I don't live in Luton as I certainly wouldn't want her as my MP! No reason, I just don't like her voice - but I wouldn't want to stop a good MP (and she may be) for such a pathetic reason, on the other hand I wouldn't be able to get past it.

Glenda Jackson became an MP. I don't know whether she is/was any good though.

BitOfFun · 22/05/2009 09:57

Slug, Mark Thomas is a great idea ...minister for justice!

Maninadirndl · 22/05/2009 10:02

No not Esther. She is a bit self righteous.

I never liked That's life either. All those carrots shaped like willies and irritating "Now...Cyril."

TheDevilWearsPennies · 22/05/2009 10:03

Charlie Brooker

jumpingbeans · 22/05/2009 10:04

how about Jeremy clarkson

bagpuss · 22/05/2009 10:08

Yes, Jeremy Clarkson for Transport Minister .

mayorquimby · 22/05/2009 11:14

for ireland:
michael "ryanair" o'leary.
he would sort this country out.

LtEveDallas · 22/05/2009 11:29

Naah, I want Jeremy Clarkson for Armed Forces Minister, the floppy haired one can be transport minister.

mayorquimby · 22/05/2009 11:31

charlie brooker would be great

mayorquimby · 22/05/2009 11:33

oh and david mitchell

francagoestohollywood · 22/05/2009 11:37

Another vote for Charlie Brooker here. Actually could I export him to Italy? Mind you most of the UK politicians are miles better than the Italian ones

raggedtrouseredphilanthropist · 22/05/2009 11:46

mark thomas

Cosmosis · 22/05/2009 12:28

" I stroke my portable Mary" that kind of behaviour is just peverted

Maiakins · 22/05/2009 12:34

Another vote for Margaret from the Apprentice!

Also, the fabulous June Sarpong - she'd certainly bring some glamour and fun to the role of PM, but she also seems genuinely interested in politics and I've heard her speaking a lot of sense on This Week.

Cammelia · 22/05/2009 12:41

I want Eddie Izzard, I see nannyogg has already nominated him

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 22/05/2009 12:57

maiakins (my DD1 is called Maia BTW), June Sarpong used to go out with an MP whose name escapes me, so she has had some experience of MP-world. Plus, she has fabulously shiny legs

minesacheeseandpicklesandwich · 22/05/2009 15:20

June Sarpong is the most awful idea ever - no,no,no,no,no,no,no,no - awful woman, awful voice, awful idea.

Eddie Izzard would be ok as Foreign Sec but otherwise he's a little bit 'Euro-friendly' for my liking. Agree on the fancying him thing, though. Something weirdly sexy there, heh.

Jeremy Clarkson for Transport, yes, just so he could get to grips with the public side.

Joanna Lumley for Home Sec. Bless her for her speech re Gordon. Huge kudos for managing to say thank-you politely whilst actually saying 'thank-you for letting me walk all over you'.

Esther could look after Health. Safe pair of hands and all that.

bronze · 22/05/2009 17:35

Ok yes to
Martin Clunes
Hugh F-W
Paul Merton
Ben Fogle
Stephen Fry
Terry but I think he would struggle now
Paxman
David Mitchell
Ms Lumley
and I dont haver a problem with Esther either

mrsmaidamess · 22/05/2009 17:36

Terry Wogan for the old folks.

bronze · 22/05/2009 17:37

How about a Dimbleby
