When is the earliest we can throw them out? I feel like starting a calendar and ticking off the days.

Reason to vote LibDem: they are extremely unlikely to win (!) therefore they are in the happy position of being able to speak truth to power. Parties who are capable of forming governments are inevitable corrupted by their desire to win/keep/wield power and will say/do what they find necessary to maintain their position. If you are not going to be the government, it doesn't really matter if you upset (eg) Big Business/the Unions/the Church/foreign Governments by speaking the truth or offering unpalatable alternatives.

You might say, why does it matter to speak truth if you have no power? Because you can't have an honest political system without at least some of its members acting from interests which are not 'political'.

And I know there are members of other parties who are like this, and that there are LibDems who are as 'political'/self-seeking as any others. But the Caesars in Triumph had a slave who walked along behind them saying 'You too will die': that's what the LibDems are for. And it's why I vote for them.

op; if all you're worried about is your savings then you are a tory and deserve all you get if they ever get back in power......not that they ever will

wychbold · 17/04/2009 10:04

We all know that Labour are lovely people who like spening our money on deserving causes but ... what money ? They have spent all the current money and have mortgaged future generations up to the eyeballs. They will probably be relieved to lose the next election so they don't have to cope with the fallout. Leave it to the Tories to sort out the mess and take the bad press again. It's like a teenager (Labour) having a drunken party but the neighbours shouting at the parents (Tories) the next morning when they are there with the mops and buckets trying to restore order.

Nancy66 · 17/04/2009 10:08

daft punk - you're every bit as daft as your name if you think the Tories won't be back in power.

daftpunk · 17/04/2009 10:11

leave it to the tories to sort out the mess!...lol and lol again

i'm sure you're having a laugh.........but just incase you are serious...the tories destroyed this country, (look back 25 years)....agree labour arn't the party they were.....but they're still the better option, although the lib-dems talk alot of sense.

wychbold · 17/04/2009 10:13

erm, who took us to the IMF? Wasn't that Labour? Maggie made some hard choices but she had to, the country was a total mess.

daftpunk · 17/04/2009 10:19

i actually have some respect for margaret thatcher...she did what she thought was right, she never swayed, she totally destroyed this country in the belief that she was doing us all a favour...i hate the ground she walks on...but she had her own mind.......the tories got rid of her in the end of course.......could see she was nuts.

QuantitativeMeasure · 17/04/2009 10:19

The Tories will win the next election.

Great analogy btw about sooty, sweep and the hand up the arse.

Nancy66 · 17/04/2009 10:23

the country was virtually a dictatorship under Mrs T - her policies were designed to keep the rich very rich and the poor in their place. there won't be too many tears in my house when she pops her clogs.

but we've now got a party in power that led us into an unnecessary, illegal and incredibly costly war. They've tried to help the less well off and, in doing so, have bred this huge underclass of uneducated, low IQ non workers who will be a drain on society until the day they die....

noddyholder · 17/04/2009 10:26

The tories are a dead cert for next time.the combination of the economy (which I know is world wide but Brown did mismanage when chancellor)and sleaze plus the desire for 'change' will force it I think. If so it will be the second time the tories have inherited a ballsed up balance sheet and the way they 'fixed' it last time was public spending cuts and raised taxes which is probably what will happen again. And anyone with savings can rub their hands together as interest rates will rise significantly under the tories.

i agree Nancy66 about the benefit culture...that has to go.....but alot of the towns which are now underclass are up north.....say no more

Nancy66 · 17/04/2009 10:33

the BNP has more support than ever before - which is worrying. they'll never be the government but they might eventually get a couple of MPS. I think they're on target to get two MEPs at the June elections.

I understand why people are turning to them - you've got the traditional white working class who are feeling dejected because they are losing out to foreign labour.

What they don't realise is that the BNP is the National Front repackaged.

daftpunk · 17/04/2009 10:35

i totally understand why people are turning to them..... and people know who the BNP are/were

Nancy66 · 17/04/2009 10:38

do you think so? I'm not so sure - I think they've played up the 'we're on the side of the British worker' but have buried the 'we hate anybody non white and gay.'

yep.. people know they're the "toned down" NF...they had to go that way....only chance of gaining more support.....more support = more power.

noddyholder · 17/04/2009 10:43

They are vile I can't believe anyone sane would vote for tehm

Nancy66 · 17/04/2009 10:50

wow - looks like I've been given people the benefit of the doubt too readily.

clumsymum · 17/04/2009 10:58

As one who is older than most of you here, (and who studied politics for a spell), can I just point out that the Conservatives inherited a very poor economy when they came to power in 1979. That government fought hard to get us thru that, and yes we suffered a recession in the 80s, which was probably PARTLY due to the lag effect of the damage already wrought.

We came thru it, yes it was hard for a lot of people and families, but when they finally fell in 1992 they left the country in a VERY strong economic position. The New Labour government rode that wave for 4 or 5 years (the lag effect again), and have steadily dismantled the economy since then, which has contributed to us being very badly hit in this global recession. Current policy will IMHO leave us a poor relation to other W. european countries & USA for years to come.
I also firmly believe that we are going to see huge rates of unemployment and deprivation hitting familes in this country in the months to come. I'm truly frightened for us.

Put that alongside the huge rise in legislation that they have introduced, that we are watched everywhere we go, and now we are being listened to / monitored in emails etc, and I honestly feel this country is in a BIG mess, and the sooner we get this lot out the better.

Swedes · 17/04/2009 11:10

I think if you are truly left wing, in the old sense, you need to vote Lib Dem or Green. New Labour are authoritarian right wing.

daftpunk · 17/04/2009 11:11

well you would say that wouldn't you...you're clearly a conservative.

tbh..i could look at the manifesto of all the main political parties and agree (in part) with all of them...you just have to vote for the party who will best represent you..... for me will always be labour.

daftpunk · 17/04/2009 11:12

sorry..that was to clumsymum

Swedes · 17/04/2009 11:14

Daftpunk - How do they best represent you?

noddyholder · 17/04/2009 11:14

Clumsy is right wrt the economy.Labour have twice cocked it up now and left teh tories to sort it out by implementing some harsh measures which made them v unpopular.History has virtually repeated itself so all teh years of borrowing too much and not saving for a rainy day makes labour popular at teh time but then we have to go through teh torture of sorting it out.
