I saw this today. Unbelievable.

Although im not suprised tbh.

Why??????

I can't even understand why he was granted bail. What was the judge's reasoning?

and something really strange about this. Earlier this was reported on the bbc, then it stopped being reported and there seems no mention of it on bbc - why?

IMO this should never have happened and the judge in question should be sacked.

I mean it's not even as if it's for a family funeral/occasion - the man will be leaving the country fgs!

How can we possibly know that he'll come back?

I suppose the reasoning is that someone is innocent until proven guilty. He had not actually been convicted of the manslaughter yet.

It is a balance between making sure someone attends court and not punishing someone who later turns out to be innocent.

EffiePerine · 10/04/2009 21:31

also could the reporting count as contempt of court? predjudice a future trial?

We do have an assumption of innocence until proven guilty, and it's up to the judge to decide bail conditions

edam · 10/04/2009 21:33

Extraordinary. He gets to fly off to celebrate his birthday in style, while accused of causing the death of a man in pub fight? What on earth was the judge thinking?

I notice police have opposed bail at every stage. Makes it even more strange that the judge is so laissez faire.

edam · 10/04/2009 21:35

No, it's not contempt of court to report court proceedings i.e. the hearing that determined his bail conditions.

TheCrackFox · 10/04/2009 21:44

It really seems unbelievable. If I was charged with something so serious I can't imagine wanting to go away with my mates for a jolly away.

wannaBe · 10/04/2009 21:52

oh I can absolutely imagine wanting to go away - out of the country - so I could do a runner.

he could easily disappear in Europe...

And while I realize that he is innocent until proven guilty, he has been charged with a violent crime which appears to have been fuelled by alcohol.

What does the judge possibly imagine that he will be doing on a weekend away for a 21st birthday party - sitting back admiring the view and drinking orange juice?

Bloody irresponsible IMO.

Makes you wonder whether the judge and the accused's father are both Masons or something.
