I know it's a Daily Mail article, but was anyone else astounded by this story? www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1165040/Supermarket-refuses-sell-12-certificate-Judi-Dench-DVD-moth er-shopping-son-8.html

I saw this last week and am really surprised that shops would restrict age-restricted purchases to adults just because they have a child with them

suggests adults can no longer shop with children present - what about prescriptions, where will it end?

cupcakesinthesnow · 06/04/2009 16:39

HIlarious that the dimwits thought she might be buying 'Ladies in Lavender' for her 8 year old son to watch!!!

Kathyis6incheshigh · 06/04/2009 16:39

Would that be one of the films Judi Dench made when she was a porn star?

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 06/04/2009 16:40

As if an 8 yo boy would be interested in watching Ladies in Lavender.

Stretch · 06/04/2009 16:41

Love the picture of them stood there with bottle of wine and dvd, just in case we don't remember what they look like!

And the sombre look on both their faces!!

Tigerbear · 06/04/2009 16:42

Exactly Lauriefairycake - where will it end?
Will adults be stopped from buying cutlery (knives in the set!), glue for odd jobs, etc, etc - all age restricted items. The world has gone mad!!!!
And Cupcake - yes, as if an 8 year old boy would want to watch that!!!!

Can't believe Morrison's tried to defend it. I would have thought "Sorry to mrs x for the inconvenience. Cashier was over zealous in interpreting guidelines. Will cover in future training".

DSM · 06/04/2009 16:54

Oh my god, that is seriously ridiculous.

Over zealous?

It doesn't even make sense. The woman was old enough, so what difference does it make who is with her? And why on earth would they allow her wine but not a DVD?

DSM · 06/04/2009 16:56

Oh god, just read the other article about the 46yo woman being refused wine in Tesco because her 14yo daughter didn't have ID.

Fucking ridiculous...

psychomum5 · 06/04/2009 17:00

proof that the world is going to hell in a hand basket.

or at least, that we are all turning into sheep and have had all common sense beaten out of us by all wankers in the leglistation departments!

cupcakesinthesnow · 06/04/2009 18:16

I bought lacy knickers in M&S with 6 and 8 year old DS's next to be this morning. MAybe I am lucky I didn't get pulled up on that and frog marched from the shop for buying inapproriate garments in the company of children

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 06/04/2009 18:20

Good lord.

the most disappointing thing is the reaction from the Morrisons "spokesperson". Idiots. Deserves a public ridiculing for that one.

mrsmaidamess · 06/04/2009 18:21

I LOVE THE BOLD TYPEFACE IN THE THREAD TITLE LIKE THIS STORY IS...BREAKING NEWS>>>AND>>> REALLY REALLY IMPORTANT!!!

Tangle · 06/04/2009 23:21

From what I know the legislation in place should have prevented the woman buying any age restricted items.

There was an assistant at a Sainsbury's local to us that lost her job after selling beer to a group of teenagers - she checked the ID of the one making the purchase but didn't check the rest. It was a setup and one was under age.

I can see what they're trying to acheive with the legislation, but this news story is an example where obeying the letter of the law (even if they had!) does seem ludicrous. Not sure how you get the spirit and letter of this particular law to be more closely in agreement, though.
