WWF is asking us to switch off the lights for an hour this Saturday from 8.30 to 9.30 to show our support for action against Climate Change. Their target is for a billion supporters.

I reckon Mumsnetters could provide a fair few signups.

Pledge support here.

and tell all your mates.

DD and I had a "practice" run last night! We went round house and switched off everything except freezer and played a few board games by candle light. Was lovely.

Do you mean tonight? Or now... ??

All very well, but some lights can never be switched off, street lamps, town center lights. A few domestic homes wont make much difference. Most people might even still have their massive 48inch screen plasma TVs on, don't need lights with one of those, not that i've got one

If people really cared about climate change they would do much more than they are doing now and climate change is natural, thinking that we are causing it is so backwards.
If a couple of big volcanos erupted tomorrow they would cause more trouble in a few days than we have ever done in a few hundred years.
I don't follow the climate change religion, global cooling is coming soon.

Well we've just had earth hour in Sydney and it was amazing to see pretty much every home without light - the stars seemed so much brighter. Admittedly the CBD was still lit up to a certain extent but I think a lot of effort was made to reduce it there as well.
Ripeberry - even if you don't agree with the reasons behind Earth hour - just turn your lights off with everyone else, go outside and enjoy a whole hour with much less light pollution.

I'm out in the countryside anyway so won't make much difference to me as we only have two streetlights .

The point of Earth Hour isn't the energy being saved by switching off for an hour.

It's about being part of a huge global movement to show the world's governments that they must put tackling climate change at the top of their agenda.

Good article in today's Guardian
