DS1 (aged 7) wants me to start a thread on children listening to the news...

He's sat next to me (having had the nerve to sneak downstairs and accuse me of not doing proper work because I'm on Mumsnet).

He knows Mumsnet solves all problems in the world (bless), so wants advice on the following:

He's 7, and when he's going to bed, likes to have something like classic fm on, or radio 2, or even radio 4. Basically it's better for him than CDs 'cos he likes to hear the presenters talking. I can understand this - I like it myself and he's an old kind of 7...!

But the news worries him and sometimes unsettles him. He doesn't really want to hear it but sometimes hears it by accident.

So, what do you think? We could insist he just listens to CDs but he's got a CD/radio/tape player next to his bed and will switch it on to the radio anyway.

Or is there a children's radio station??

We've told him to switch off anything which worries him and to ask us about it. I know you can't protect them from stuff and he's intelligent enough to ask us about stuff, but he asked me to start a thread...!

sorry! I won't post the famous rude lyrics to Sailing By then

(don't worry - I'm only kidding, there aren't any - well, as far as I know?)

Awww - thanks for all the posts - I've only just looked since yesterday!

Soooo, if I was going to be organised enough to sort out podcasts, and let's say I was a complete technophobe (just for argument's sake ), how would I go about doing this?

Would I have to burn them onto a CD from Itunes?

Ds has got loads of story CDs but they're not quite the same - it's more the feeling (I think) that someone's out there - but podcasts might work!

ds1 is nearly 7 btw and often takkes my ipod to bed to lisrten to podcasts on...

To play a podcast on a CD/Radio which does not have an input for a MP3 player, you will need to burn the podcasts to an Audio CD in Audio Format not Data. CD Writers usually come with software to do this for you... I use Nero Express which is quite simple - drag and drop the MP3s and it does the rest.
Windows Media Play 10 also will burn to CD. See Media Player 10 Guide

The BBC has some really useful guides to podcasts, with loads of good info and they should answer your questions. Your ds might even like to read through some of it (or the interactive guide?) with you if he's intereseted in technology?

Good starting point from the BBC

You could get him an ipod (if you don't already have one in the house)

1GB ipod shuffle is £29.50 at Amazon

or any kind of cheap mp3 player (it only really needs to hold enough content for a couple of hours' listening so doesn't need to be huge)

Selection of cheap mp3 players at Argos starting at ten quid

Read the BBC stuff, it'll tell you everything you need to know and you could start by selecting some podcasts and downloading them to your computer today and see what ds thinks:

BBC Children's podcasts

Radio 4 podcasts, if your son has some favourite shows

Let us know if he goes for it (I am WAY too invested in your son's bedtime listening!)
