I don;t think you have much of an idea about depression, rigby.

notnowbernard · 23/03/2009 20:13

ER

Ignorant post. Google 'clinical depression' instead and see what you come up with

NotAnOtter · 23/03/2009 20:48

i saw this and felt so so sad

depression is terrible..

too sad I dont know what else to say

ElenorRigby · 23/03/2009 20:48

I have suffered from depression for most of my adult life. When I was about 16 I looked out of my window and wanted to throw myself to my death.
I before I had kids tried to hang myself. Poor me. I coundnt do it when I thought about my mum.
I have had PND.
I take citalopram at the present time.
I would never hurt anyone physically nor emotionally, least in a long long line would be my kids.

I do know about depression sadly but I would never stoop so low as to harm my kids.

notnowbernard · 23/03/2009 21:07

I am sorry you have had to battle depression, er. It is such a difficult illness

But I can't agree with your "stoop so low as to harm my kids" comment. The suicidally depressed person is, by definition, unable to make rational, reasoned choices... their illness has affected their ability to reason and make judgements about anything. This is why the Mental Health Act is used in these circumstances, to protect the person in order to maintain their safety

That is to say that not every suicidal person will act on their feelings or ideas, as you yourself have already experienced. I hope I didn't make you feel that you had to disclose more than you wanted regarding your illness

Whats your story notnowbernard?

notnowbernard · 23/03/2009 21:20

I've worked in the field of mental health for 12yrs, as a nurse

ER, I don't think anyone eulogises Ted Hughes or Sylvia Plath because of their demons and the dreadful things they did to themselves and others. They are admired, respected and eulogised for their poetry. You'd not heard of them until recently - well, to many people the world over they are two of the greatest poets who ever lived. I'm personally not crazy about their work, but I understand how important it is. They just also happen to have very tragic life stories attached to them. It's so sad that these terrible things continue to have consequences down the generations.

ipanemagirl · 24/03/2009 11:43

I think this is so sad, particularly for his sister who is alone now of her immediate family.

Ted Hughes was clearly a classic philanderer and very selfish like some artistic types can be. From what has been published, imo, he was a total and utter bastard to both Sylvia and Assia after her (far less sympathy for Assia though, she should have seen what he was capable of.) But Sylvia Plath had a history of depression and suicide attempts so it's hard to blame Ted Hughes as much as the bloody Daily Mail does here.

Ted Hughes was evidently a towering talent of poetry etc But I still find his apparent sense of his own aesthetic importance to have been pretty obnoxious. It's as if he saw himself as a great dark force of nature. Please! What about a great dark force of selfishness! I like my artists to have a little more self knowledge.
