I am very torn here as I don't believe in all this banning but anything that annoys George Galloway is all right in my book.

edam · 20/03/2009 22:37

Agree Galloway is a horrible little man who consorts with bullies and misogynists. But not letting him into Canada is a bit extreme. And will just add to his sense of self-importance.

AitchTwoOh · 20/03/2009 22:37

was it the leotard?

i like george galloway. he used to be my mp, and a damn good one imo. i liked that he didn't toe the party line.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 20/03/2009 22:38

yes, that's the danger.

edam · 20/03/2009 22:39

if you are looking for people who don't follow the party line, there are far better models. Like Bob Marshall Andrews. Galloway is horrible and hardly unique in having opposed the Iraq war.

AitchTwoOh · 20/03/2009 22:40

i'll tell you what, people, if your sister is being held hostage by a cuban hotelier, you want him to be your MP.

one call, that's all it took.

AitchTwoOh · 20/03/2009 22:41

no, but he was my MP at the time, edam. i liked that my mp didn't toe the line on Iraq. i'm allowed to feel that way i think, i don't have to go off in search of other mps. i've met him a few times, and i numbered some of his very dedicated party workers among my friends.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 20/03/2009 22:48

I like George Galloway.

But he makes me laugh. He had recently gone to a Respect meeting and suggested to some of his muslim colleagues that he wasn't drinking either. Except that he was drinking at the pub right before.

AitchTwoOh · 20/03/2009 22:50

oh he's kinda full of shit, deffo. but kinda not, also. he really is a believer.

bettany · 20/03/2009 22:50

Infandous. That's what they called him. I've never even heard that insult on MN before.

Yes, I saw him on Channel 4 news this evening looking really pleased with himself, he seems to wallow in controversy.
However, I agree with Stewiesmum the Canadian Goverment seem to be lacking common sense.

Comment from stewie's link "we (Canada) have enough nuts already. We don't need to import any more".

On a more serious note, as a woman, I agree with banning anyone who makes supportive comments about the Taleban.

OP posts:
edam · 21/03/2009 22:35

quite, bettany.

GLaDOS · 22/03/2009 10:26

He is a very corrupt individual. Will go read the link now.

Ronaldinhio · 22/03/2009 15:56

more slippery than a bucket of monkey foreskins

wishing I was a Canadian living in Canadia now

KayHarkerIsPlayingWithMitchell · 22/03/2009 16:05

Odious beyond words is about right. He's a self-important twerp.

MrsMuddle · 22/03/2009 16:07

I guess they're not saluting his indefatigability, then!

donnie · 23/03/2009 10:43

I agree that Galloway has precious little integrity as a politician. He reminds me of Derek Hatton - ultimately a massive egotist. However I do support a lot of his political stance, particularly in relation to Palestine.
I think this reflex action makes the Canadians look like fools.

mayorquimby · 23/03/2009 11:33

i think there's a dangerous precedent in all this.
a bit like the banning of bnp members from being in the police force.
while i don't agree with either george galloway (heard some horribly sectarian rants from him) or the bnp. it does seem a little bit like authorities saying "everyone is entitled to the freedom of political beliefs....as long as we agree with them."

i know they are completely different authorities, i just couldn't think of a more suitable comparison as my brain is fried from too much grand slam celebrations that only stopped at some time this morning.

bettany · 23/03/2009 11:40

I guess a good comparison is when the Dutch anti Muslim MP was banned from this country. Totally different ends of the political spectrum of course, which is interesting.

I've met the man on several occasions. It always impresses me how he manages to get his head through the door. He is odious and slippery and will only pay attention to what you say if he percieves you as being important or if you reflect him at twice his own size (to quote Dale Spender). Banning him will only increase his feeling of self importance.
