High heels - why on earth do so many women inflict such pain upon themselves?

Interesting article in The Guardian last week.

I don't like high heels and don't understand why so many women purposefully disable themselves in the name of fashion. By nature of their design they turn their wearers into passive objects unable to walk or run.

As the writer says "You can't help remembering the times when women broke their ribs to narrow their waists."

Give me a nice pair of flats any day!

What does anyone else think?

Didn't The Times do an article about this not long ago?

Anyway, I sometimes envy women who can wear heels without a problem! I am only 5'2" and would like a boost to my height if for any reason. However, they hate me and give me blisters, callouses the full works!

Doesn't anyone worry about the effect that they will have on your calf muscles later in life? They bunch up apparently!

i posted a thread about this - my dh said the other day that he doesnt really like me in heels, and weirdly it did make me think about just why I wear them. I do remember my 20 year old self, wearing flats to a ball and wondering why others wore shoes they couldn't dance in.

At 5ft 1in (and from a Family with all brothers who start at 6ft 2in)I always wore heels, the higher the better.

ten years ago had to stop wearing them for health reasons (not feet actually)and soooooooooo miss them.

Since becoming a mum I have got into high heels because basically, my body is wrecked so I am now relying on accessories and mirrors to make myself look better

Heels give my legs and arse and thighs great shape and make me feel like a GODDESS

It's worth a little PAIN for that return

My thoughts on heels are pretty similar to the writers. I really can't see the appeal at all of choosing to wear something that hurts. I have no wish to disable myself, and much prefer to stride than totter. I don't think that heels are particularly flattering - but then I can't recall the last time that I looked at someone's feet and thought what lovely shoes, or at how they walked and thought what a nice wiggle. I don't like the come hither of a bum wiggle much, and when someone is attempting to walk fast in heel the effect (to me) is quite funny. I used to walk to and from the train station in my last job (about 15mins at speed) and walking with a companion who was wearing heels always added 5-10mins to the walk, plus moaning about the standard of the pavements...

The only heels I have are for my boots (probably just under 2 inches) and I'd really rather they weren't because I never feel completely stable in them and after wearing them for a day my feet feel very tired. However the ankle support does make up for much of the wobble, and you really can't buy nice boots without heels.

Well I can walk and run in mine...Can't see why people think it's such an ordeal

I've never worn high heels as i tried to and they hate me!
I've always ended up with badly sprained ankles as i walk on the side of my heel.
I thought most women wore them to look taller but i saw a 6ft woman in really high heels and she was towering over every man around
