Spiegel Online says police confirmed 10 victims but say there might be more. I don't know if they mean more victims are critically injured or if they worry that gunman who has not been caught yet might kill more.
I just hope they get this guy quickly.

god ladies you just scared the shit out of me. Here I am on my sofa waiting to pick up DS1 from Kindergarten in...southern Germany. A huge wave of nausea overcame me.

It's not his school btw but please bear in mind that MN is international.

Am going to give DS1 an extra big cuddle in 15 minutes.

admylin · 11/03/2009 11:01

News said the police have closed off most of the town area where teh gunman fled towards and are searching - telling people to stay indoors, avoid public spaces. Then I thought , OMG imagine if it's home time for kindergarten and primary schools get out at 12 in some places in Germany too.

Hope they catch the gunman soon.

abroadandmisunderstood - I am sorry I have frightened you by my OP. I understand that MN is International, but I am not sure that it should not be discussed because someone from Germany may read it?

what i mean is, that surely if it is in the news here, it must be all over germany.

They are now talking about 16 dead, 3 of them as he was on the run.

I understand what you mean, my heart was in my mouth when I first saw the headlines as we have family in Bavaria.

Hopeforthebest
How scary for you. It does not seem possible that something like that could happen here.

According to the news reports, his family owned 18 guns.

He has been shot and killed by the police.

Nighbynight · 11/03/2009 18:09

tbh, I am surprised it doesnt happen more often, considering the power that the schools have, and how they inflict it, leaving parents and children helpless, furious and resentful. Society here is very stable, I guess, and people generally have a big respect for "the rules".

Horrific for the families involved

Hulababy · 11/03/2009 18:12

BBC

Article suggests he was an ordinary ex pupil with no poor history at school - good grades, etc.

MmeLindt · 11/03/2009 19:32

Just watching the news.

His father was in Schutzenverein (shooting club) and had 14 guns, one of which was not in the gun cupboard. The ammuntion was not in the gun cupboard.

He had an air rifle that he used in the cellar.

I am a Mumsnet stay at home British Dad with two beautiful kids three and five, living in southern Bavaria. I can't believe what has happened. To think you raise lovely kids then in their teens they are gunned down for nothing.

This being Germany I don't think they will do anything, not be able to. This will happen again.

My kids will in a few years enter the school system here. No one likes it here it is is inflexible, stressful and unchanging. They even have the Eleven Plus still here and they seem proud of it, especially in conservative Bavaria. Many are trying to change it though. But Germany is a very conservative place.

MmeLindt · 12/03/2009 11:28

True, Jeremy, it does take a long time to bring about change in Germany.

I know that they passed new gun laws after Erfurt. This sadly did not prevent Winnenden as the boy took his father's gun (which was bought legally and registered but not locked in the safe as it should have been). The father may be prosecuted

I have just read that the head teacher announced on the tannoy "Frau Koma is coming" to alert the teachers.

Koma is Amok backwards, it was a coded warning to tell the teachers that a gun man was in the school and they should lock the classroom doors.

Nighbynight · 12/03/2009 17:36

dd is at secondary school in bavaria, coincidentally, they are having a week project on non-violence.

jeremy where are you, we are also in southern bayern, and yes, the schools are a nightmare.
