story here

call me sceptical - but it wouldn't be the first (by a long shot) RTA "accident" that has occurred to ministers/members of parliament where they've then died.

You see with the prevalence of genuine RTA's a "staged" one is easy to pass off as a genuine one.

thats what i thought too faq

FAQinglovely · 06/03/2009 18:39

there were infrequent ones even before MDC became a prominent party when I lived out there. Ministers who had previously "rocked the boat" in some way would then "sadly" die in a RTA - most memorable (for me) was one whose car crashed into a donkey.

Just saw this. First thought through my mind...

"Accident. Yeah, right, course it was."

Mercy · 06/03/2009 18:41

oh no and I belive you faq, happens everywhere tbh

Flibbertyjibbet · 06/03/2009 18:46

Thats exactly what I thought too.

DollyMessiter · 06/03/2009 18:51

SadSadSad

donnie · 06/03/2009 19:52

How very sad. My first thought was also one of suspicion.

nowwearefour · 06/03/2009 19:54

gosh. i am so very sad for the family. what dreadful news. of course one simply must be suspicious. how absolutely completely terrible.

Themasterandmargaritas · 06/03/2009 20:00

Terrible news. BBC world in a non biased reporting way, was at pains to discover the exact circumstances of the accident when interviewing a freelance journo at the hospital.

Of course, here in Kenya, should someone do something not liked by the regime, no one needs to stage an accident, they just get straight to the point and shoot them.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 06/03/2009 20:02

Yeah, me too

differentID · 06/03/2009 20:07

I'm glad I'm not the only cynic. So sorry for the family and as you said FAQ, easy enough to pass off as genuine especially with high levels of corruption within Police/ politics.

JackBauer · 06/03/2009 20:08

Am so glad it wasn't just me. I immediately thought..uh-huh, accident. yeah right. very
He is a veyr brave man to have made the untiy government, TBH was waiting for something like this.

wb · 06/03/2009 20:08

It is suspicious but RTAs with fatalities are pretty common in developing countries. And I don't know how it is in Zimbabwe but in Botswana RTAs involving the country's large population of feral donkeys are common.

nickytwotimes · 06/03/2009 20:09

Just heard it on the radio.
I was also immediately suspicious, but then I don't know what it is really like out there.

FAQinglovely · 06/03/2009 20:10

themaster - yes I suppose that would have happened in SA too - but (thankfully) gun crime is still relatively low in Zimbabwe doing it that way would raise more questions than "oh dear another RTA"

FAQinglovely · 06/03/2009 20:15

wb - I know they're common I've witnessed the event (and aftermath) of many - some absolutely horrific including one with a combi (commuter omnibus)- but there has been a large number of Zimbabwean politicians that have all died in similar circumstances. We were still living in Zim when we heard the donkey one - and it was DH (a Zimbabwean born and bred) who went "oh yeah......."

And lets not forget that Tsvangarai had to delay his return to Zimbabwe earlier last year because of credible leaks of an assassination plot and he had previously (even before the MDC came into being) survive attempted ones before - as secretary of the ZCTU (Trade Union) 8 men burst into his office and attempted to throw him out of the 10th floor window.

Oh I agree it's suspicious. I lived in Nigeria in the 1990s. It was much simpler there - opposition figures were just arrested, 'tried' and hung

KayHarkersHeartBelongsToTen · 06/03/2009 21:27

ha, was just coming to post this with a face. Dh was speaking with a Zimbabwean friend yesterday. Has someone mentioned the Strand vigil tomorrow?

Kimi · 06/03/2009 21:35

Poor woman

2shoes · 06/03/2009 22:13
Sad
lou33 · 07/03/2009 17:35

my best mate is from zim, and he turned up at mine wihtout warning today, he hadnt heard the news

he immediately said the same as us, no way was it a terrible accident

ABetaDad · 07/03/2009 17:40

Terrible news for Zimbabwe and for Africa as a whole.

Huge human potential is being wasted and it has been the same for all 25 years of my working life of very direct personal experiences trading commodities out of Africa.

I truely wish it were otherwise.

FAQinglovely · 07/03/2009 17:41

I see the latest news indicates that the MDC are saying that it looks like in this case it was genuinely a horrible accident. So I could well stand corrected on my suspicions on this one.

OP posts:
lou33 · 09/03/2009 15:58

Tsvangirai has been quoted as saying he thinks it was an accident, looks like we may have been wrong
