Michelle Obama's sleeveless style sparks controversy - is it inappropriate for her to show her arms?

Here

I thought that the dress she wore to the Stevie Wonder concert was fabulous and have not problems with her showing off her arms.

Is a sleeveless dress still considered racy?

why would it be inappropriate fgs they're only arms! what is this the 1800s!

squeaver · 01/03/2009 21:23

oh ffs

bran · 01/03/2009 21:23

This really is a case of a journalist scrabbling to make something out of nothing. She looks perfectly respectable and appropriate in all of those photos. Although I don't like the pink dress in the last photo, it looks a bit like a nightdress and it clashes horribly with sofa.

That was my feeling, me23. It is not as if she is showing off her norks.

I like her style. Classy but not boring.

Sleeveless dress controversy lol lol lol

BigGitDad · 01/03/2009 21:26

I wonder if the media will treat her the same way as Cherie Blair though truth be said I didn't like her (CB that is) but then my impression of her is from the media.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 01/03/2009 21:29

It only seems to have sparked controversy with one person who reads the Chicago Tribune. Someone from a place called Wheaton.

I'm not staying here to discuss the opinion of one person from Wheaton

ABetaDad · 01/03/2009 21:31

My wife says:

"No woman over 35 should show her arms bear to the shoulder or wear leotards".

HerBeatitudeLittleBella · 01/03/2009 21:32

Are we living under Shariah law or something? Since when have women showing their arms been considered a debating topic?

More mysogynist rubbish. Who gives a fuck what she wears? It's what she thinks and says what matters, but this is a deliberate policy to reduce her to the sum of her dress sense. Disgraceful.

MmeLindt · 01/03/2009 21:33

ABetaDad
I can understand that rule for women with bingo wings but she has such toned arms. If my arms looked that good I would wear sleeveless dresses.

Crikey, BetaDad, your wife sounds a barrel of laughs

MmeLindt · 01/03/2009 21:34

Ok, I probably should have posted this in Style not in In The News.

Sorry if anyone is offended.

MrsABetaDad could have told me yesterday before I bought a new sleeveless dress! Crikey could have saved a fortune.

squeaver · 01/03/2009 21:36

If I had arms like Michelle Obama I'd be showing them off at every opportunity. Man, she must spend a lot of time in the gym.

BarcodeZebra · 01/03/2009 21:36

Because this is is important exactly how?

TheFallenMadonna · 01/03/2009 21:37

Bonkers.

Technically though, does it matter what she thinks and says, or wears, what with her husband being the one who was elected and all...

BigGitDad · 01/03/2009 21:37

MrsABetaDad I think was using his wife as a get out clause....

fishie · 01/03/2009 21:38

i was wondering about her arms today. they are lovely but i would be cold.

BigGitDad · 01/03/2009 21:38

Must say though, Mrs Obabma has lovely arms... Maybe we need a lovely arms thread...

MmeLindt · 01/03/2009 21:38

BarcodeZebra
It is not important but this is MN.

We had a thread earlier about how to fart. That is what happens on MN. We debate nonsence sometimes.

I read the article, found it amusing and wanted to share it.

If you don't like it, then just don't bother to post.

Nearly half a century ago, Jackie Kennedy could wear as many sleeveless dresses as she wanted, and nobody ever accused her of being inappropriate. Why? Because she shut up, looked pretty, popped out kids and put up with JFK's satiriasis without a murmur of complaint. It's only when women make the patriarchal media feel uneasy, that they are attacked for what they wear.

Jackie Kennedy

and again

look no sleeves

gosh, sleeveless again

See what I mean?

BigGitDad · 01/03/2009 21:42

What an icon she was, she is timeless.

MmeLindt · 01/03/2009 21:43

Is it Bella, or is it the rise of the religious right in America? Or both?

Interesting, I did not think about Jackie Kennedy wearing similar dresses.

It is not that long ago that Diana was being critisised for wearing too short dresses. And I recall seeing a comment about Kate Middleton wearing a skirt that was deemed not appropriate for royalty. So it is not just the crazy Americans.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 01/03/2009 21:45

Look, I really don't think there's an issue here and we've managed to make a debate when there really isn't one.

The only person who seems to be complaining about sleevelessness is some reader from Wheaton.

There is no controversy.

And yet we manage to argue over it
