The court of public opinion????

Haribosmummy · 01/03/2009 17:54

Really???

The court of law is being replaced by the court of public opinion?

As said by the government today.

I find that Really difficult to deal with. It actually means good news for me, cos public opinion wouldn't have my DH pay even a 1/3 of the money he ACTUALLY pays to his ex.

But, since when did the court of law become meaningless?

We might as well all do exactly as we please and then take a public vote on whether it's reasonable.

Let's start on taxes.

Madness.

Yes that was a bit harsh actually. These threads would be boring if we all had the same opinion.

As Vince Cable said, if the government is that worried they should have let RBS go to the wall, then Fred Godwin would have been elligible for a maximum pension protection of 27K per year.

Funnily enough, they decided to pump it full of our cash instead.

Insolvent trading is illegal if you are a small limited company, struggling to keep going to protect your employees' jobs in the hope that you can trade out of your problems, but it's OK if you are RBS. The Government said so, so it must be true.

If we are going to go with "the court of public opinion" then we should get rid of Gordon Brown and replace him with Jeremy Kyle. Perhaps there could be a phone vote on every issue?

I don't agree with Fred Goodwin having a massive pension but some twit in the govt. agreed to it so it is all a bit late really.

Haribosmummy · 03/03/2009 17:08

Ooh, think, THeCrackedFox - We wouldn't need juries to evaluate evidence and debate the innocence or guilt - we'd have the all important lie detector results - that's all we'd need.

Plus a phone vote on everything from working mums to Paedos. It would probably be a nice little earner.

I disagree with Goodwin getting such a bloody good 'pension' (which has more noughts than the average persons salary!) but contract law is contract law...

Using him 'as an example' leaves the rest of us mere mortals in a periless position.

I love that, the "court of public opinion". That well known legislative body. That renowned judicial institution.

Why don't they just say we'll completely ignore the law to pander to the popular vote whenever we so choose. Oh, and if we make enough noise about doing so then maybe people will overlook how we screwed up in the first place.

frazzledgirl · 03/03/2009 17:41

cestlavie, great post.

And that is, essentially, exactly what they're saying. It's just pronounced slightly differently...

TheCrackFox · 03/03/2009 17:54

Funnily enough the "court of public opinion" didn't swing into action when we invaded Iraq.

Slightly worried now that whenever I sign a contract in the future Harriet Harman might decide to have a phone in vote about it.

poppy34 · 03/03/2009 18:26

personally why not go the whole hog and make jeremy kyle lord chief justice?

poppy34 · 03/03/2009 18:28

grammaticus -might also want to distract it from fact tehy've just insured the lloyds etc toxic assets for a ridiculously small amount.

Grammaticus · 03/03/2009 18:42

Yes, that too. Or perhaps she wants the leadership after Gordon Brown (not sure why though!)
