"If they look like crap, surely the public can come to that conclusion unaided and without a leg-up of bitchy prose from a bitch"

I do love him. He's funny and intelligent which is a superb combination.

pooka · 01/03/2009 09:39

He's excellent. Love the description of Mrs Burnham's dress as "cheerful". And quite right in the bit about the queen mother living an interesting life in a palace until she was 101 and there not being much to be sad or sombre about there.

ditto babbity

MrsMattie · 01/03/2009 09:42

I heart him. I suspect DH does too, although he wouldn't admit to such an unmanly thing as a crush

'It's ridiculous enough that this is attractiveness advice being dispensed to women who have shagged Brad Pitt by women who, I'm guessing, haven't - but it's also really rude. Everyone going to the Oscars has made an enormous effort to look nice. The polite response to that, in public at least, is: "You look nice."

Brilliant.

great article i would not have read otherwise - thanks

that woman looks rather fab in the minidress, doesn't she?

fantastic article, the man speaks sense!

morningpaper · 01/03/2009 10:18

I love him so much

bronze · 01/03/2009 10:26

I had to go and find a picture of Mrs Burnham and am at a loss. Ok I wouldn't wear it but I can't see whats wrong with it.

"Everyone going to the Oscars has made an enormous effort to look nice. The polite response to that, in public at least, is: "You look nice."

And they all always look better than I do 99.9% of the time.

LaTrucha · 01/03/2009 10:50

I thought it was just me who loved him. Very happy not to be alone!

Nighbynight · 01/03/2009 10:51

I dont see what was so terrible either. Would have been fine if the skirt was below her knee (looks undignified shorter).

bagsforlife · 01/03/2009 11:18

I love his articles every week. V.funny and clever.

TheCrackFox · 01/03/2009 11:24

He's great isn't he?

solidgoldbullet4myvalentine · 01/03/2009 11:26

Ok it is funny, clever, and he is mostly bang on. EXCEPT at least half of the bitching and slagging of sleb females' clothing and appearance is written by men. It's not just about women being vile to women, an awful lot of this stuff comes from men (the first Worst Dressed list was written by a man, much of the venom about body shape and size in the fashion industry comes from men). This is about reminding women that their appearance is more important than anything else about them, that they exist for men to look at, and if they aren't good at the game (or, shock horror, refuse to play it in the first place) then anything goes with respect to slagging them off.
It is a good piece, but on that level it turns the whole 'body fascism/beauty myth' stuff into just a matter of silly women being mean to other silly women.

Habbibu · 01/03/2009 11:28

Oh, I love him. He's an oasis of reason.

higgle · 01/03/2009 11:37

But it is so much more fun to be bitchy than polite...

bran · 01/03/2009 11:41

Most TV personalities are less likable the more they do outside of their field, but there are a whole slew of comedians that I like better the more that I hear from them in a non-performing mode. David Mitchell, Dara O'Briain, Bill Bailey, Simon Pegg and quite a few others.

spongebrainbigpants · 01/03/2009 11:53

"Show me someone who's genuinely interested in glamour and I'll ask you why you've introduced me to your twat of a friend."

He's fab!

BUT, I still didn't like Frankie Burnham's outfit!!

bagsforlife · 01/03/2009 13:12

Can someone link to the offending outfit?

bronze · 01/03/2009 13:36

here complete with Liz Jones drivel

bagsforlife · 01/03/2009 13:46

Thanks

cherryblossoms · 01/03/2009 14:08

Almost sad about this thread. I, too, thought I was lone in my love for David Mitchell. Now I realise that if I ever (in my dreams!) meet him at a party, I will truly be one-of-the-many with my stuttery, puppy-eyed protestations of affection. Sigh.

That Liz Jones article has actually managed to get me narked. I know Liz is as mad as a badger but I did, really, think she had a bit more about her than that. Her article is worryingly banal. I always thought she could be relied on for having a slightly off-the -wall perspective on things. But that piece is so ... standard-issue fashion-patrol, of the most pedestrian order ... . Clearly, life amongst the animals has turned her brain to soup.
