Apparently, peolpe have written on the BBC web page expressing their dismay aat the new CBeebies presenter being disabled (having 1 arm). One parent said her child was traumatised.

This is astounding. I had to point out to my DS that the presenter had one arm as he hadn't noticed, and we had a good discussion about disabities.

I think its great shes presenting.

Hmmm. DS2 (aged 2.9) bit an arm off his gingerbread lady today and said in a pleased-as-punch voice "look there's Cerrie". Cue stunned silence around the dinner table. Am I raising the next Jimmy Carr?

I think she is an awful presenter, nothing to do with only having one hand, DD however loves both her and Alex...she talks about them when they are not on , I will forgive her bad taste as she is only 2.6!

I agree too with the horrid Muffin bird makes me cringe too!

If a child is 'shocked and distraught' at a presenter having one hand, says more about the adults around her does it not? I shall not mention it to DD, if she ever asks any questions, I shall respond as casually as if were discussing why she does not have brown hair like mummy.

wow what a lot of fuss over a kids presenter with a disability.

ForcesSweetheart · 08/03/2009 13:13

DD 3.2yo is nuts about Cerrie, to the point where she hides one hand up her sleeve and says "I'm 'tendin a be Cerrie". My mum thinks I should discourage her from pretending to have one hand, but I mean it's not like she's taking the mickey or anything - she's just trying to be like someone she idolizes. I'm more worried about her poor pronunciation than her efforts at being one-handed!

Freckly, I know exactly what you are saying. I've only seen her once and thought the same. 'Why is her sleeve rolled right up and not covering her arm'...not in a prejudice kind of way as I'm certainly not, but just in a kind of it didn't look natural. Then of course, I realised that she uses the elbow joint as we do a hand on our right arm that's all and a sleeve rolled down would inhibit that use as much as a mitten would inhibit us using our hand.

People kicking off about a disabled presenter and writing to the BBC about it..... Wonder then if these people are outraged as MrTumble has disabled children on his show?
My little one couldn't care less she watched everything on CBeebies as well as football and other films with me... If it's loud and colourful she's happy... She doesn't mind disabilities or races!!

Grow up you wingeing nation!!

This is a zombie thread. Six years since this was in the news.
