I had to check that it wasn't April Fools' Day
I've had it with Ryan Air now anyway and just don't even bother looking for deals with them.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 27/02/2009 10:13

We won't be flying with Ryanair again, even though we would like to take DC's to see their cousins in Ireland. We looked at how much it was going to cost from our local airport (30 mins away) to Dublin and was £350, they don't want families to fly with them. They are just thieving barstewards.

Sherbert37 · 27/02/2009 10:24

Just wondering what is left to charge extra for? Copy of the emergency procedures?

ChopsTheDuck · 27/02/2009 10:28

that would cost me a fortune with 4 kids.

It'd put me totally off booking with them. I like easyjet, hope they don't get this idea!

edam · 27/02/2009 10:31

I don't know why anyone flies with them, tbh, they clearly treat customers with contempt. Wouldn't give them the dirt off my shoes, let alone pay for the privilege of being abused!

BouncingTurtle · 27/02/2009 10:34

I heard a rumour that the oxygen masks were going to be coin operated.

Personally I never use aeroplane loos if I can help it - pee before I get on the plane!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 27/02/2009 10:36

My DS1 loves plane toilets! That would cost us a fortune! I never have and never will fly with them though.

bran · 27/02/2009 10:40

I never fly with them unless they are the only airline to go to the airport I want to get to. I'm also getting ever more suspicious about the state of their finances and wouldn't be at all surprised if they either cancelled a load of lower profit routes at short notice or went under without any notice at all.

I would strongly recommend if anyone books with them for this summer that they make sure their travel insurance will cover them for the cost of accomodation etc if they either can't go at all (and therefore can't use accomodation booked) or get stranded abroad and need to pay for hotels for longer.

Belgianchocolates · 27/02/2009 10:45

How do they know how much money people have in their purse?? I've traveled without a pound coin before. Haven't flown with them for ages now, with 2 dcs it's cheaper to drive half the time. Last flight was dissapointment: ds was a baby (about 9m) and I wasn't allowed to take my nappy bag as hand luggage as well as my normal handbag, so ended up stuffing nappies, wipes, passports, drinks, baby food, etc... in my handbag. On top of that I was charged for my extra luggage because there's no allowance for a baby [grrr] and with their less than usual allowance it was just impossible to pack stuff from me and him 2 weeks in 15kg.

TheCrackFox · 27/02/2009 10:47

Right don't all flame me but I have recently booked with Ryanair despite stating "I would rather shoot myself in the head" on other threads.

My PILs live in France and to visit them we used to fly with Flybe which was Edinburgh>Southampton>Limoge. The last time we did this we got to Southampton and the French traffic controllers went on strike before we could board the plane . We had to spend 2 days in Southampton, we were only on holiday for 5 days so not great.

Anyhoo, Ryanair have just started direct flights from Edinburgh. We have booked for this Summer and it is not cheap by any standards, but we have booked for the convenience.

We had to pay for priority boarding to ensure we can all sit together.(DS1 (7) gets horrific travel sickness so he has to sit next to me or DH.) We have to pay to check in our suitcases. Because of the suitcases we cannot check in online which means we have to pay to check in! All in all, all the sneaky charges added an extra £300 to the bill. Not exactly budget airline prices.

I know Ryanair are a bunch of cunts but if they start charging for the toilet then I will piss in a cup and had it to the air hostess.

NotPlayingAnyMore · 27/02/2009 10:47

"I don't think there is anybody in history that has got on board a Ryanair aircraft with less than a pound." - erm, I did, only back in 2005 because - funnily enough - I wasn't going to need any in Montpellier!

I'd be interested to see what the implications are for Ryanair with regard to reasonable adjustment under the Disability Discrimination Act

Belgianchocolates · 27/02/2009 10:51

notplaying that makes 2 of us who boarded with less than a pound! I went to stay at my mum and dad's in Belgium, no need for pounds over there either!

And actually, how would it work the other way around? What about foreigners traveling to the UK. They wouldn't have any coins. When you exchange money, it tends to come in notes!

Buda · 27/02/2009 10:52

I have been saying for ages that Michael O'Leary would do this.

And I reckon he will start charging for oxygen.

He really is the lowest of the low.

edam · 27/02/2009 11:02

Oh I don't know, there's a lot of competition out there atm. Fred Goodwin, for example. Who do you want to see first up against the wall when the revolution comes?

Buda · 27/02/2009 11:10

Tricky one all right edam!

duchesse · 27/02/2009 11:25

Can't imagine they'll be increasing their market share. They're just taking the piss.

Simplysally · 27/02/2009 11:30

No - they're charging for the piss .

I'm booked with them next Saturday so I'd best make sure I have nice long go on the plane loos whilst they're still free.

Think of the free publicity they're getting from all this.

Mind I hate Easyjet almost as much after a fiasco in Geneva which enforced self-check in desks and no 'human' option .

MmeLindt · 27/02/2009 11:33

I have always supported Ryanair, because even with all the add-ons they were still the cheapest airline but this is just ridiculous. And their fares are just not as cheap as they used to be.

Easyjet must be rubbing their hands in glee though, as lots of people are switching to them. We have not flown Ryanair for ages, always go for EJ.

MmeLindt · 27/02/2009 11:34

SimplySally
What was the problem in Geneva? I am flying out of Geneva in June.

Simplysally · 27/02/2009 11:42

It was the Saturday before the schools went back (at least in England) and there were literally hundreds of people having to check-in at a computer terminal themselves, then join a second queue to drop the luggage off (what was presumably the old-style check-in desks). To compound the problem, most people had skiing or snowboarding equipment to check in in addition to cases so it took quite some time, plus there were some large-ish family groups. We checked in 3 hours before our flight on the self-check terminal but we spent about another hour waiting to check our cases in this second queue which was a bit frustrating.

To be fair, there were airport staff around to help and normally most people wouldn't carry as much luggage but the midst of the ski season etc etc. I did email Easyjet with some (I hope) constructive criticism the new system and had a very nice reply.

Simplysally · 27/02/2009 11:44

I think it was the pushing and shoving to firstly get into and then out of the second queue (the normal gap at the front people leave by had been swamped by people shoving up to the desks) which annoyed me more tbh. Not entirely Easyjet's fault but most people were stressed by then.

MmeLindt · 27/02/2009 12:26

Thanks, Sally, I will allow myself a bit more time then. Should be a bit quieter in June though, not so many skiers anyway.

theyoungvisiter · 27/02/2009 12:36

I saw this!! Just when you think Ryanair couldn't get any more arsey they suggest something like this.

What about people with illnesses or conditions that mean they need to use the toilet frequently?

What about people travelling without change or from countries where the pound/euro is not currency?

What if there is a huge delay or you are stuck on teh concourse for hours? Ryanair will be pocketing more for every hour you're stuck on their pissy aircraft.

I hope if they introduce this policy it means hoards of small children having "accidents" on their stupid seats - except I sincerely doubt they would clean it up so probably the only person punished would be the next customer.

Itsjustafleshwound · 27/02/2009 12:39

I was listening to the news - how exactly are they going to implement this - put the lock on the toilet seat?

Because, surely, with the queuing up in the plane, it is not like you let the door shut before the next person goes in to the cubicle - IFSWIM ???

theyoungvisiter · 27/02/2009 12:42

"Because, surely, with the queuing up in the plane, it is not like you let the door shut before the next person goes in to the cubicle - IFSWIM ???"

Very true - I hadn't thought of that.

Presumably you'll get huge queues because a whole family will have to go and pee at the same time to save cash and it will just result in kids in there for hours being told to "have a try" because elder brother needed a wee and mum doesn't have enough cash for both to go at separate times.

Recipe for a nightmare IMO.
