for at least driving back to the street where he stole the car from rather than just dumping the baby whereever he was when he realised he had "company" here

Wonder why a 4 month old was alone in a car at night in the first place???

Marthasmama · 27/02/2009 08:25

Bloody hell how scary for that baby's mum! I thought things like that only happened on The Bill or similar, not in RL!

FAQinglovely · 27/02/2009 08:27

2pts4 - it wasn't really "night" - further down the article is says 5.15pm.

2pt4kids - I know it wasn't that late, but otherwise, I'd bet it's for the same reason MN gets a lot of threads about whether it's alright to leave an X month/year old alone in the car

I agree hedgewitch, I often put a child in the car and nip back in to get something, or take things into the house first on returning if the baby is asleep in the car. I lock it though.

But it could easily happen.

Melscorp · 27/02/2009 09:11

Poor parents!!! At least he did the right thing and returned the baby to the scene of the crime, another individual might have just left the child anywhere!! Have to be grateful for small mercies!!

mm22bys · 27/02/2009 09:44

I was a bit pissed off a few weeks ago to be told off by a very well-meaning passer by for leaving DS2 in the car while I ducked into the shop...

but I haven't done it since!

She did make me think that something could happen....

And this story proves she's right.

At least no harm was done to the baby.

Do you reckon SS will get involved for child neglect?

nailpolish · 27/02/2009 09:49

my dad had his car stolen while he has sitting at traffic lights

the thief threatened him with a knife to get out

you dont know where the mother is - you are all assuming she was no where near the car

she could have been walking round to get in after putting the baby in the seat
she could have been about to get in her own door

NorbertDentressangle · 27/02/2009 09:52

The mother was in the vehicle:

"the mother was approached by a man while sitting in her Lexus on Hypatia Street.

Believing he was a police officer, she began to get out of the vehicle before being pulled out of the way".

Belgianchocolates · 27/02/2009 09:56

Lots of you clearly haven't read the article properly. The mum was in the car. Was approach by someone who looked like a police officer, began to get out of the car and was then pulled out. She managed to get her 2yo out, but couldn't get to the baby.

She didn't leave her baby alone in the car overnight!!

nailpolish · 27/02/2009 09:58

there you go then (i didnt read article properly either )

you can all put your claws away now

FAQinglovely · 27/02/2009 09:58

actually belgian the article has been updated since I posted the link - that information wasn't in there when I posted at 8.23 this morning, you'll notice that the article was updated at 9.48 - so that detail has been added in.

Marthasmama · 27/02/2009 09:59

That story has been expended upon since FAQ first posted it. That detail wasn't in it when I first looked at the story BC.

nailpolish · 27/02/2009 10:00

aw i bet you are all dissappointed now you cant sit and be judgey

FAQinglovely · 27/02/2009 10:01

This is what the original article I linked to said (still had it open in another tab)

"A car thief dumped a four-month-old baby on a pavement after realising the child was inside.

The baby was in the back seat of a silver Lexus which was stolen on Hypatia Street in Bolton, Greater Manchester, on Thursday night.

A short time later the thief spotted his passenger and drove back to the street where he left the child, who police said was unhurt.

A 39-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of kidnap and theft.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) were alerted to the car theft at about 1715 GMT.

After being told the child had been brought back, officers began searching for a Nissan Micra that the suspect was believed to be driving.

Collision arrest

About 30 minutes later they were called to reports of a collision between a Micra and two other vehicles on Winchester Way.

"Officers attended and discovered a Nissan Micra had collided with a Citroen Xsara and a Volkswagen Passat," said a GMP spokeswoman.

"It is believed the Micra had been used in an earlier incident on Hypatia Street, Bolton just after 5.15pm, where a silver Lexus was stolen.

"A baby was in the back seat of the car at the time of the theft but the child was returned to Hypatia Street a short time later unhurt."

The man, who was arrested at the scene of the collision, remains in custody for questioning."

FAQ Sorry, I suppose that'll explain why everyone is wondering why the baby was alone in the car. Didn't look at the times. Sorry.

FAQinglovely · 27/02/2009 10:02
