Can i ask all you wonderful people to give a few minutes to consider signing this government petition...........
Joe Townsend is a war hero and his family have been refused permission to build him a bungalow by Whealdon Council. This is total madness and as many people as possible need to let them how crazy they are.
I am going post this in chat too so more people see it. Thank you for reading.

Can I ask - and I am not asking to be difficult, but to try to understand the issue before I sign the petition! - what is the medical reason why he requires a bungalow to be built, rather than having one bought and adapted, or applying for council bungalow and adaptations or some other means of getting suitable, already existing accomodation?

And if he has a specific need that can only be met by building a bungalow, could he not appeal to the council with doctor evidence of the need to build as opposed to adapt?

lottiejenkins · 07/02/2009 22:01

The bungalow is planning to be built in his grandfathers land and they want him to be independent but near, I dont know what the reasoning is to do with medical grounds. It just makes me mad that they wont recognise and help a war hero!

Wealden District Council - Joe Townsend Planning Application Statement

I would never discourage anyone from signing this, but I won't be signing it myself.

Recently a local paper reported that 2 Royal Marines were refused entry to a pub, but this wasn't on the basis of being military, rather that military ID isn't a commonly accepted form of ID and this is already widely known.

I've also had to ask someone to stop smoking around my DS on the train only to be told that he had the right to smoke anywhere he liked because he'd fought in my name

Joe Townsend has my full sympathy but as the statement says, the council are already in discussion with the family.

The whole point of fighting for liberties is that they are the same for everyone

lottiejenkins · 08/02/2009 10:04

What the council have said is rubbish about the local community.........no one has objected to the building of the house............

Notplaying, I am sorry but I don't understand your reasoning here.

I have looked at the FB group and it seems like some positive action may be happening.

I don't understand the council's reasoning either .

NotPlayingAnyMore · 08/02/2009 11:12

I suppose I don't consider encouraging people to "bombard" (their words, not mine) government and media with e-mails as "positive action".
None of the groups seem to have mentioned simply appealing the decision.
The council's reasoning is simple: all they are doing is adhering to laws made democratically, which the developers should have made themselves aware of before submitting their application.
Claiming Joe fighting for our rights exempts him from the law is completely contradictory.

The groups are also discussing the council's decision as if it knew it was proposed for a disabled Marine. Although it should never affect the decision it's unfair to claim the council doesn't sympathise as planning applications just don't tend to go into that much detail.

lottiejenkins · 08/02/2009 11:15

Its called Freedom of speech.....thats why people are bombarding the council.....It should never have been refused in the first place. I am proud that Joe fought for his country and sad that he was so badly injured. I know something for nothing that blardy stupid council are going to get "bombarded" a whole lot more after Saturday nights Noels HQ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

this is difficult. Because planning laws do exist for a reason, and just because someone has served in the military should not mean they are exempt from those laws.

Presumably Joe Townsend would be able to apply for a bungalo based on the nature of his injuries? And while it would be more convenient for him to live in the grounds of his grandfather's house, his needs would still be able to be met in an existing bungalo, especially bearing in mind that the building of the new bungalo would take some time - where will he be living while this is happening?

And where do you draw the line? If it is allowed for one, then surely everyone else has a right to build what they like where they like? especially if mitigating circumstances can be brought into the argument.

tbh I think plans should be more lenient when disability is an issue, this young man needs his independence, but will need to be close to his family.
I am sure if we were to check, the council that said no have probably allowed some hideous extensions and buildings at some time.

lottiejenkins · 09/02/2009 19:31

It has been confirmed on the FB group today that permission has been granted for the bungalow!
